    Bill !

    Ouch !

    Sorry to hear this.
So you are gonna be debilated some for a while. I suppose will interfer with your work too.

And your freshly painted bike messed up a bit.

Those darn tar snakes, even when its cold.

Take care of yourself there. Keep us updated about your treatment and recovery.

    Dave

PS: Bars for the 750, that would be the kind with the ends capped shut with weights inside, correct? Not the kind with open ends.

Sorry to hear of your tumble- hope you heal quick and straight. I've dislocated my collarbone (hockey) and broke the "top bone" (point of shoulder), and it isn't fun, but you should feel much better in about a week, but don't try to hurry recovery. I tried to do too much too quick and now I have aches from scar tissue. Hang in there!

        Hey Dave,
Work is out, really bad because I have a lot lined up.
The bars are 12-14" long with an end cap drilled and tapped for an end weight to be screwed on.
Most GSX, GSXR's and the Hayabusa have interchangable bars.
Track days don't look so affordable anymore…

From someone who's busted the same collarbone twice, find a way to recline while sleeping. Getting up and going down to laying position hurts like #$(#(*$ with a broken clavicle. A recliner is really nice, or get your wife to put a lot of pillows against the headboard in bed so you can recline. Also get one of the slings with a velcro strap to hold your arm against your body so your shoulder doesn't get jostled - it really helps alleviate some of the pain.
Mostly what he said ...been there done that too! You probably hurt more from being banged around from the crash than the actual broken collarbone. Once the swelling from everything else goes down you'll probably be off the pain killers, maybe a just T3 to help you sleep. Don't do too many or you won't poop for a week, yes they will really constipate you. If you don't have it pinned (not really necessary in most cases) and you wonder why your shoulder is still flopping around at the 10 day mark, that's because it takes about 12 - 14 days for it to start some sort of mending process. It'll feel pretty well healed by the 6 week mark but it really isn't. Don't lift anything heavy for at least 3 months. I just about blew it at the 8 week mark by trying to lift some heavy boxes because it felt alright but at the 12 week mark was out splitting wood and it was fine. Sorry to hear about your mishap but don't feel too bad, it is one of the easiest and most common bones to break.

I broke my right collarbone a few years back coming off my bicycle (been riding motorbikes without incident for 20 years and then this happened ).

Calcium and Magnesium tablets are good for bone knitting. I was back to normal in about 6 weeks. Try and keep it still. It sucks. No other words for it.

Although I did meet a guy who broke BOTH collarbones at the same time at a track day once. Bags not being him....(but at least I could still go to the toilet by myself)

Get some new Playstation games - you'll have some time for them now
            Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )

            Past:
            VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

              Boring…

FIRST: I want all you guys to know I'm reading all your posts, and am getting lots of good tips and advice, Thanks!

So, when will I be able to pick a guitar, or pluck a bass?
I was actually making good progress on both when I crashed.
              Bummer…
Today I'm gonna try to play one handed drums along with some Blues recordings. I got 2 good legs and left arm, so i can at least keep a beat.

                Sorry about your mishap.

Nearly a year ago, I went down on my BMW GS and broke my left one, a couple of ribs, dislocated the shoulder, and tweaked my neck. One thing that I was in denial about was my age. Yup, there's no way of getting around it. Once one gets into his fifties, it takes longer to heal up. I'm still feeling frequent twinges and have days when I have some IBU with my breakfast.

Don't try to rush things.....we aren't in our twenties (physically, that is).

The String Bass (upright bass as some people call them) you could play right now as long as you're not bowing it and you keep your arm in the sling up against your body. Cramps the style a bit, but it works. Otherwise, guitars and so on don't work too well.

                      Something to do…

Hey Dan, I ain't got an upright, but I do have a Yamaha bass with a small body. I can reach over and pluck the strings OK.
Hey Bruin, I saw a TV story on that drummer and his accident, quite a good story.
Well Thursday I came down with a bad cold and that made my week miserable. It magnified all my aches and pains about 4X. Plus I pulled a stomach muscle from coughing, boy does that bring me cheer.
But I really flipped out when I pulled my car out of the garage and saw antifreeze on the floor!
Trouble comes in triplets, I got the triple blues…

Hey Bill, sorry to read that you had an off!.Hope that the break isn't too bad and they manage to set it right.I broke mine in the middle and detached it at both ends in an auto wreck 10 years ago and the hospital messed it up so badly I have to go in 3 weeks for an MRI to see if they are going to re-break it and try to fix the damage,2 of the tendons that join my shoulder to my neck are wrapped over the bone instead of behind it so I now have difficulty turning my head to the right.
I agree with the rest of the posters about the calcium(I just drank lots of full fat milk) and the swimming- but stay with going across the pool in the shallow end cause when the muscles around it cramp(and they will) you don't want to be in deep water-have a guess how I know!!. You might also find that a pillow under your arm will help you sleep on your side as it keeps the pressure off the healing bones. Get better soon and you can now use the convalescant time to order and watch all the Northwest 200, Ulster Grand Prix and TT dvd's that your loving and caring wife will of course allow you to order!!!!!.Johnny

Wow, my sympathies, Bill. That's a hell of a way to start the season. Here's hoping for an uneventful return to full functionality.

Yeah, a lot of us aren't getting much younger here, and it doesn't work wonders for recovery times. It took me almost a year to recover from a torn rotator cuff I incurred last February. (OWW!) I'm just now back to some of my previous exercise routines, and I'm always leery anymore about applying a lot of power to anything. I hate being less resilient than I used to be.

On the other hand -- an 8-week (or so) recovery puts you at the early-June area. Not much consolation, but at least you'll have a summer this year.

Hope it goes well for ya.

Yeah I was feeling sorry for myself-you know bitching and whining, until my wife and I were in a supermarket and a guy walked past with a completly empty left sleeve-he had lost the arm right to the shoulder and I just thought "quit your complaining ya soft git"!!!!.How did you get on with the hospital, did they manage to put it in the right place? try the pillow idea it's worked for a few other people I know. Here's an idea for the guitar playing-put it on your lap like a hawaiian guitar then you can use downward pressure on the strings with your fingers which should'nt affect the muscles in your shoulder and upper arm( I used to work for a guitar maker as a sprayer/ polisher), it works for Jeff Healy, he plays like that because he is blind and a damn good player. hope you heal fast and well, Johnny
