Watch OUT! The 4 legged vermin are out to get you!

Since the weather has finally turned springlike (is that a word?), my bike and I have been my wife's taxi to and from her workplace (lucky for her, she's still working a real job, with good money). It was 43* F when we left the house this morning at 6:45 am. I wanted to take the twisty back road to the job shop where she is the Quality Manager, but she wanted me to get back out on the main highway, State Hwy 371, so I complied. It was entirely uneventful, even the traffic was light (first time since the governor's fishing opener week last week). I dropped her off at work, and headed for the twisty road to go home (suspenseful building Jaws type background music here).

Riding on the not too long twisty road, I cranked up the tunes, the radio station was into Led Zep this morning, perfect riding tunes! I really thought I was alert to all my surroundings as I deftly zipped through the curves, reveling in the warm weather and bright sun. There were no other vehicles on the road, but me. As I rounded a smooth right hand sweeper I saw a black SUV coming from the opposite direction. My attention was mostly on the oncoming traffic, and as I was accelerating out of the turn, I caught a flash of something out of the corner of my left eye. I had just enough time to go WOT, I heard the clatter of hooves as the devil deer flashed across the road, in the spot I had just been. Talk about a close call! It was so close to me that I could clearly hear the hooves on the road. I probably imagined that I could hear it sucking air as it went past. The SUV didn't even slow down, I didn't look at the driver to see what he/she was doing, probably drinking coffee, texting and eating donuts or something, so the close call I had was most likely totally unnoticed by that driver. If I'd been nailed by that deer, he most likely would have added insult to injury by crushing me and bike before he realized anything.

Anyway, that was my morning ride, and I had to tell y'all about it, it's not just the cagers that are out to get us, it's the Bambi critters and all their friends as well.

Fortunately, my two incidents of "Deer hunting with an inapprpriate weapon" were with a cage, not a bike.

Glad that your encounter was only "close" and not "REAL close".

ya i saw a bunch here too. i love these back somewhat rural roads with speed limits 50+ and lots of those little buggers.. i saw one coming up on my right so i slowed a bit honked my horn and it darted to my left away from me right into an on coming cage. head on next thing the kicking beast was skidding toward me from the impact!! dumped the throttle and got the hell out of there!

My daughter's car was totaled by a "used deer" coming off another car. That would suck on a bike.

            Hey Dan,

I'm glad you got away with nothing more than an elevated heart rate. I think deer are beautiful animals. But why are they so dumb and unpredictable?

All the best to you and yours,

Since my deer strike 2 weeks ago, Ive been thinking about mounting a bike cam in the fairing. Hole saw a hole large enough to catch whatever may come my way.

My set up came with a handlebar mount that I modified slightly and put on the front, right turn signal stalk. Works great and it caught my usual wildlife encounter quite clearly. Just click on the bird killer link in my sig.

Dan, glad bambi didn't spoil your ride.

I've only hit two birds, had a squirrel jump up on one leg, climbed up to my
shoulders, go accross my back and jump off, a dog grab my pants leg and about pull me off a bike, and some big yellow butterflies end up in my bubble face shield, but no big critters.
Saw not too long ago where some biker was killed after he hit a black bear and a woman biker run off into a barbed wire fence after she hit a turkey, but hitting a deer is not so uncommon. Driving at night would surely increase your chances. Hopefully I'll stay out of their way and they'll stay out of mine.

I'm yet to have any close encounters of the animal kind on the bike, i have had 2 birds fly into my cars though, one hit the grille and the other broke my aerial.

Heck, it's not just Bambi that's out to get us it's Thumper too. Had a jack rabbit run right in front of me tonight as I was headed home from Tkent's place. Had I been about a mph faster I probably would have had rabbit stew for tomorrow's dinner.

Nah, those jacks are big. He might of had some cowboy stew.
Why they are so big, I had one stand in the road and flip me off as he made me drive around him. In my truck.
So the bike got you there?
                          Good deal.
