    consider it broke

Me and my father (he has a vstrom) were going to go for an 800 mile adventure as he called it and travel from tricities up to moses lake ( i live in tricities hes in moses) then go down to yakima over chinook pass which i might add is UH MAY ZING!!! then down the back side and follow highway 123 through the ranier national forest and stay at skamokawa campground outside lakeview washington. well when we hit pack wood my bike started "lurching" i ignored it (stupid me) and continued on. We woke up the next moring from camping and started on our way i figured my bike would quit misfiring and lurching but it didnt it in fact got worse, as we come around this corner there is about half mile of traffic backed up and i look ahead and notice someone laying in the road. we drive up there and turns out this lady was following to close on her harley and ran into one of their other riders and laid her bike over and had some back pain, so me being an EMT and my dad a Paramedic we decided to help them out and we talked to a volunteer firefighter from the area who was going to let us use his garage to change my spark plugs cause of the misfiring,so we change the plugs and they are normal colored and head out on our way, then my bike starts missing and ends with a totally dead cylinder by the time we hit Naselle washington. i am extremely frustrated by now because it is around 400 miles from moses lake and i have a broken bike!!!! so we called my mother who got in the truck and came to pick us up! 6.5 hours later the rescue effort was accomplished and my bike was loaded and our 10 day trip ended on day #2..... super downer but i highly recommend fort ebey state park for a campground if there is anybody out there near that area ( we stayed the night in whidbey island my brother lives there) i lost all hope in my bike and was going to sell it but i think i am going to tear it down and rebuild the motor so i have a bike to ride by next summer! although i have no idea what im doing but thats what i have this place for

Nice looking bike, 850?, 1100? There's plenty of help here. Dropping a cylinder could definitely be something not nearly serious enough to require a tear down. I have had a cylinder drop out from a fouled plug due to float setting in the carb involved for that cylinder. Could be spark, valve adjustment, lots of things.

I find working on my motorcycle mildly therapeutic when I'm not cursing.

      Namerif,

Aw, how annoying. But you had something of an adventure.

      THanks for posting your story.

Do not tear down engine for this.
Is most likley not engine internal problem, but something like ignition or carb prroblem.
Could be something simple like spark plug cap, or carb float setting. Post in the techincal section. Lot of folks willing to help.

Something in the ignition system or the carbs is your problem, I'm sure. You shouldn't need to tear the engine apart to fix this problem unless you just want to.

Nice to see another Washingtonian although you're on the other side from me.

Eastern WA has the most AWESOME roads!!!

I had a cold cylinder on my 850. Took the carbs in and the tech showed me that the float was sticking ... and told my why it mattered. He told me to tweek it a bit until it moved all the way up into the carb body freely without any friction points and I would again get gas. It worked. Hope your issue is so simple.

Another thing to test easily before tearing stuff is this...If you look inside the plug boot and you see a slotted plug holder ..looks like a main jet..then you have resistor caps.. Remove that and you see an arrangement like this with a ceramic resistor. Cut some 1/8 inch brass or copper rod the length of the resistor and replace the resistor with it. If you get spark back theres the problem..a bad resistor. I really suggest everyone with resistor boots just do this mod and save any troubles down the road..

Yes Ebey is a cool park. My buddy just became the park ranger there, due to budget cuts. 7 jobs down to 2.

This place is almost 100 miles away from the Pacific Ocean.

Oooo that's pretty. I was patting myself on the back for being able to ride on Jan 31, but all I get to look at in Maryland is dead sticks.

so she runs again however, it still hiccups, we were adjusting the timing but there was no reaction to the changes, usually you will notice a faster idle etc but nothing was happening so we pulled the spacer out from behind the electronic ignition and it started to respond when we would change the timing, also cleaned the rust out of the tank and rebuilt the petcock, i just am very disappointed because it still hiccupps and lurches but i cannot find the reason why!!! if anybody knows a mechanic or somebody that knows these bikes inside and out that i could take it too such as another GS owner i would more then gladly pay for it i am at a total loss, i dont want to get another bike, however this one is just moody as sin and wont stop creating a pain in my side
