TCK, I lived in OH in the '80s, and never heard of such nonsense. Great governmental over-reach.
When I might come home with a new vehicle, I call my agent ahead of time. He can then honestly verify that my 30-day grace period has started, and that I'm insured.
Was stopped by a cop in Albuquerque once, and temporarily forgot where I had stashed my registration and proof of insurance. The cop said that if I couldn't produce it in another two minutes, he'd have my bike impounded and I'd spend the night in jail, before getting to try to call an Ohio lawyer (where I lived at the time) to straighten it out. I found the documents with all of a minute to spare (tool tray).
Bought a car in Georgia, where only dealers issue temporary plates, and new private purchases can be driven without plates for 30 days. Needed to drive it through TN, KY and IN to get home. While the "full-faith-and-credit" clause of the Constitution might help, I didn't want to chance it. So I pulled the plate off of another car of mine for the trip home, figuring that, unless a cop randomly checked it, I would be fine. I was.sigpic[Tom]
“The greatest service this country could render the rest of the world would be to put its own house in order and to make of American civilization an example of decency, humanity, and societal success from which others could derive whatever they might find useful to their own purposes.” George Kennan

in NY if you are caught driving without insurance it is a 1 yr revocation of your DL and a $500 civil penalty, not including any other fines etc.
