GS1000G ride in North Florida (HD video)

I've been wanting to shoot some video while riding, so I recently got a mount to use with my small Sanyo HD camera. It arrived yesterday, so I spent this morning doing some test rides with it mounted in various locations, all behind the Vetter windshield. It was 32 degrees on the first one!

I found the best location was with it attached to the right mirror. I had tried the cycle sound box and the left handlebar and liked the mirror mount the best. I also tried attaching it onto the fairing so it had a direct view, but the wind noise was too great and the video quality was terrible.

The video was shot in HD, and I think it lost something in the editing process. For some reason I can't upload to YouTube from Adobe Premiere anymore, so I had to process it and then upload it. Details are in the YouTube info.

Thats nice ! Beautiful day with that big blue sky. You're losing resolution behind that fairing. I just made a 5min vid with my crappy kodak duct taped to my helmet. Fun !

Nice video. Turn the camera a few degrees to the right next time to put the on-coming road in the center of the screen.

In Fla, you twist to the right or left when you come to a stop sign at a dead end. Beyond that, twisting is frowned up. Actually there are a few bendy roads but mostly just scenic ones. Nice video and the bike looks great.

I shot some more on the way home from church today, one road is a nice 2 lane with a couple of s-curves and some terrain. I watched it when I got home. The camera just isn't cutting it- it was worse with the stabilization setting on. A friend that races karts said I should try a small cam that is designed for stuff like this. I think it is called Go Video or something similar.

Go Pro. They are a tad expensive from what I've seen though.

Yeah, that's it. I think he said he got it on sale at Best Buy for under $200. It is the 960 version that also does 720. I'll have to do some shopping. Your video looks good, nice to see a GSX1100G.

I found a used Go Pro Hero HD at a good price and it had a lot of extra stuff. The mounting system seems overly complex. I liked being able to mount my camcorder using the 1/4-20 hole in it- which allows for many mounts, including the one with the swivel joints I used that mounts nicely to the bars or mirror. The bar mount for the Go Pro was flimsy and to mount it to the mirror I had to shim one of the bolts. Even at that it wasn't real tight.

After a couple of test runs with the Go Pro, I decided to make a hybrid setup (see attached) so I could use the better mounting system. I took a piece of 1" diameter aluminum rod and cut it to about 1/2" thick. I drilled & tapped it for 1/4-20 and then scuffed one side as well as one of the Go Pro flat surface mounts. I had peeled away the sticky mounting piece leaving a flat plastic surface. I then applied JB Weld to bond aluminum to plastic and clamped it together overnight. The weight of the Go Pro is not much, so this should be a decent setup. I will do some more testing soon.

What I don't like about the Go Pro is you can't tell what it is doing while riding- on my camera, I could have the display open and see if it was recording or not, as well as see exactly how it was aimed. At one point with the Go Pro, I thought I was recording only to find out I wasn't. The sound quality was not as good- but I was using the full waterproof case. The camera says to use the non-waterproof case for < 100 MPH . The settings menus are lengthy as well. The video I did end up with was much nicer though. I'll post a link when I get some more done.

Here is one using the new Go Pro HD camera with the above mount. Video quality is a lot better, but now it's picking up more wind noise- possibly since I'm using the non-waterproof back. I had it on the right mirror, so I will move it more towards the center for the next ride.

LOL busy roads (and a family) are why I sold my original GS a few decades ago. S. GA & N. FL are truly God's country.
