I searched all of my early bikes including the '79 750 and I came up with a few ideas.
I was going to offer to loan you my inner rear fender from the 750 as that is where the sticker is or perhaps someone else could do the same except with their '78 750?
Or, you could switch seats with someone if that is where the sticker is located.
Or, you could copy one of these and change the displacement or the one from my '79 750 and change the date to 78?
These are on '78 1000 spare seat pans.

Alright that's actually not a half bad idea! I thought the sticker was supposed to be on the "neck" of the frame up by the VIN... The guy may have shipped me two inside fenders I will have to check the other one.

Otherwise I'll start perusing for some stickers.

On my '82 GS1100G it, what's left of it, is also on the inner rear fender.



Certainly SOMEONE has a sticker on a '78 750 plastic fender that can loan you one just to get over this needless hurdle?
Hoping that you find a sticker on one of yours but that should be a viable option otherwise.

It is gone from mine. Doesn't make any real difference, because I'm not moving to California.

Perhaps we could find a few pristine stickers, take good photos of them, and get reproductions made.

Exactly what I was thinking.
As ridiculous as this is to be needed on something this old, what would it hurt?
That is why I tried to post what I could find, hoping that someone with the program on their computer could make reproductions.

I've got the program and can attempt repros but will need a photo of a better sticker.

You don't want to make it look NEW do you?
That, would indeed be a hard "sell."

Just find a reasonable copy that applies to your bike, print it out, cut it to size, and use some packaging tape over the top and trim the edges.
Why wouldn't they accept that? it's a copy of the "original" sticker for that bike, they're not made to specify each individual bike like the one on the front of the frame head. You might want to use a silver, gray background, you can artificially age it by trowing a little dirt, scratch it,
etc. After you get it affixed, you can smear some dirt, oil or grease on it
to give that "been around the block" look.

Wow, I really like Maine after reading this thread. I registered by bike as an "antique". It requires no inspection and the yearly excise tax was $7.40.

In Arizona I went to a Registration and Title store front in a strip mall. $25 plus an extra $10 for the vintage plate and I was out the door with a new registration and title in 10 minutes. The OP story is one of the reasons I moved from California.....too much government.

Here in Saskatchewan Canada I went in to the ministry office with my bill of sale (one part of the registration paper) and walked out with insurance, plates, and a new registration for $48. Best part!?!?
I didn't even have a license!
AND $10 of that $48 was the cost of writing both my auto and moto license tests.

Out (up) here in the wild (north) west the government pretty much stays out of our business.

I say scan a sticker from something close, print it on label paper, slap it on the inside fender, call it done.
I think it's easier to register vehicles in foreign countries than CA, of course some consider CA to be a foreign land, much like NJ.
