Having read your post on PNWR, I'd ignore anyone there who is not a member here
Your problems could be as simple as your points - I see you're getting some new ones, A feeler guage, some screwdrivers and a timing light and I'll bet you find 20 HP!1978 GS 1000 (since new)

reading this post makes me think back on when i lost my first set of points and the biike acted just like this, was able to ride it home but for the most part it felt like i had lost a few cylinders but everyonce in a while they would kick back in for a 1000 feet of full power and then it would lose it again. thank god that i got home and the points that i had order a few days prior so i would have a just in case set was sitting in the mail when i limped her home, threw them on and in ten minutes she was roaring like a beast again
