Bent Rim... Front Tire Blow Out... Crashed

First let me say that I am fine. My riding gear did its job, and all I have is a 3 inch bruise on my hip. No serious injuries at all. ATTGATT does work.

So this morning I had met up with a bunch of guys and we had a sweet 200 mile loop planned of the best roads in the area. We had planned this ride since April as there were lots of schedules to try and accommodate. There was about 9 of us that met up in Newark to head out. Including fellow GSer, The Schwartz (Aaron).

We get rolling, I was 2nd from the lead, Aaron being just behind me. While merging onto the highway, I hit a huge pot hole. It didn't look so bad before I hit it, and figured it shouldn't be a problem. WRONG. This was the mother of all potholes and DEEP. Mistake number one.

We got down the road a little ways and I felt the front end feeling really heavy, and the bike not wanting to turn at all. However our group had become spread out, and with there not being too much of a shoulder, and our exit approaching, I figured I could make it off the highway. Mistake number two, and sealed my fate.

Now knowing something is very wrong with my front tire, I slowed down a lot for the exit ramp. It is a gentle curve, nothing drastic or challenging so I didn't think much of it. Being careful I initiated the turn in. About a third of the way through, the front tire gave way. I guess the sidewall pressure was enough to break the bead from the bent wheel, and down I went.

Lowsided on the right hand side of the bike, and slid on my right side. Thankfully the riders behind me were a safe distance away, and there was no sudden stops. I jumped up immediately, shut of the still running GS, and assured everyone that I wasn't hurt. Two guys went up to flag down cars headed towards the exit ramp, we got the bike upright, and called the police.

Once we stopped everyone else who hit that friggen pot hole checked their bikes. Sure enough Aaron had a bent rim, and so did another rider.

State Trooper came, instructed the other bikes to leave the side of the highway. So with my assurance that I was fine, they continued the ride. Aaron and the other rider with the bent rim did an inspection, their tires were still holding air, and deemed it safe enough to CAREFULLY limp home. Avoiding the highways.

I got a $235 tow for 17 miles, some new scuff marks on my riding gear, and am in the market for a new front wheel.

I had my camera with me, here are some pics of the damage from the crash. Mostly cosmetic.

The culprit of the crash. Bent rim, and flat tire, unattached to the wheel

Smashed up my Maier fairing, but it served as a sacrifice because my headlight, bars, controls, and gauges were undamaged.

The case savers sure did their job to. No damage to the motor, but my number 4 header has seen better days.

I am OK. The bike can be fixed. Lessons learned:
    1 Don't hit potholes.
2 Pull over the instant you realize a problem
    3 Don't get a blowout
4 Gear works, and definitely saved me from being injured.

I am happy to be here to report my story to you all.
    Thanks for reading.

PS anyone got a front wheel for an '82 850G?

I have your wheel if you don't find a closer one, but, that's not much of a dent. I have had bigger dents and lost no air. Did the tire get punctured also? Low pressure? Pinch flat in the tube? Something seems funny here. Did you go tubeless on a tube type rim? Just wondering, this going flat is unusual. I got a much bigger dent hitting a pothole hidden under a water puddle, very slow speed but riding two up with low tire pressure at the time, it hasn't leaked at all.

Good it was a low speed fall, good for the Attgatt, glad it worked well for you.

good you are ok, and not serious damage to the bike. in the UK we would be able to claim compensation off the highways council for the pothole causing the damage to your bike and riding gear.
dont know if you can do that where you are?

Thanks for the sentiments. I'll keep you in mind if I can find if I can't find a closer one.

It's a tubeless tire on a tubeless rim. It is possible that it has a puncture. I have not investigated the tire fully yet.

Would it be possible to fit the front wheel from an '82 650GL to it? The wheel is the same size and pattern, but it only has a single disc...

I will try and contact the state about the pothole, but I highly doubt I will get anything back. If I do I'll have to wait forever to see anything back at all. I did get a phone quote from a shop that straightens wheels, but they'd need the bare wheel (no bearings or rotors) and two days, plus $160...

You can put both discs from your 850 on the 650 wheel, the holes are drilled through.
The rest should be the same.

Bummer Tim Tom, but there's not much damage and you're not hurt. Good result.

i'll take a rim too pleeezze

i swear to god, someone's out to get us. Whenever Tim and I get together, misfortune follows...

I rode mine back, home safe and sound, kept on county roads and off the highway at a max speed of 35.

I'll post up some photos of the rim later on. I don't know if it's fine to ride on or not and given what happened today I'm not inclined to. Anyway, here's another good excuse to do all the wrenching I've been putting off Seems like I'll be grounded for awhile.

                    Sorry for your crash.

Regarding the wheel, a good frame shop can most likely straighten it out. Might be cheaper than purchasing a good used wheel.

Or the local wheel repair shop...

But I bet a used one is cheaper.

Don't know, what does a straight GS wheel go for these days?

local shop the tow guy mentioned called USA Wheels . Spoke with them on the phone and he said motorcycle wheels usually run about 130-150 for repairing. For that kind of money I might be better off starting to look for a parts bike.

here's a shot of Tim on the roadside with his lovely wheel, for your viewing pleasure

Ohh yeah Aaron had his GoPro with him, he may have gotten the pothole hit on video.

The rider two bikes back also had a camera, and I think he got the actual fall on film. Interesting to see if this is the case. I'm gonna be on youtube .

Aaron, check the listings here, yours is a very common wheel, someone will have one. '79 850G.
