    20000kms (12000mi) on a 50cc Honda in 6 months!

So last week I was lining up for the ferry in Victoria to go to the PNW Rally when I spotted this little old Honda waiting to board the ferry with me. I made a note of what the guy looked like (wasn't very hard) and looked for him on the ferry. He told me it was a 1967 Honda moped made just for Europe. He was from Holland (crazy Dutch) and had the bike shipped to Philly where he met up with it.
He told me that his son had been paralysed in an accident a couple of years ago and that his wife had had health problems too. He is 59 and needed to escape for awhile. He had his license plate stolen in Ohio (they just ripped it off the fender, a-holes!) and had his brother send him another from Holland. He went to Alaska and rode through the floods in Calgary. He started out on our Island in Port Hardy, which is over 600kms from Victoria. He blew his motor on the way and had his brother send him another motor to Victoria.
He is staying mostly in campgrounds but the odd motel for a treat. He is on his way to the Mexican border but not going in Mexico, as his wife says it's too dangerous (like riding a moped with a top speed of 30mph across North America isn't). Just check out the helmet on top of his luggage that he is wearing. Oh yeah, check out the extra gas tank he added.
What a privalage it was to meet this man and share in his story.
It is true..."You meet the nicest people on a Honda".

wonder if he'd benefit from http://www.warmshowers.org/ Its a kind of personal hostel situation aimed at bicyclists.

We're members and have hosted very intersting people from around the world. Many of them cycling around the world.

That little Honda may qualify considering the crank pedles I see

Feel free to send him my contact info if he ends up in ABQ he's got a place to stay.
1981 GS750L - Owned since 1990 when graduated high school and since have been discovering all the things not disclosed by seller.
1983 GS750E - bought in 2016 as a rough runner to use while rebuilding 81L and then to combine with ES to make one good one
1983 GS750ES - bought in Toronto in 2015 on a lark as a non-runner, missing front cowling and exhaust - If you have a 1983 750ES front cowling let me know! Blue would be nice

I wish I would have gotten a contact from him. I think his story is motorcycle magazine worthy for sure. No purpose other then to clear his head. Love it!

Amazing story. Bit sorry for the guy, but good to know that riding is giving a little piece of mind.

The old Honda 50cc was equally amazing, in its many forms. It was my first bike and rode the hell out of it. The CUB is the best selling motorcycle of all times, basic transport for much of the world.

I haven't managed to put 1000km in total this summer on my bikes so good on him and really makes you think how excessive a hayabusa really is. Cool storey. One of the guys at work actually rode a dt 400 to Florida and back and I thought that was impressive.

I did some digging and it looks like the Cub had the largest production run of any vehicle ever with over 60 million units in 2008. It seems it's still being built in 13 countries. To put that in perspective the air cooled VW Beetle is the most produced car with just over 20 million. A truly amazing vehicle, but don't think I'd be into putting that many miles on one. I guess I'm just not that adventuresome.

I never would have guessed that when I rode cross-country on my 1150, 1100ccs of it were superfluous.
