    On fumes 1150 Kat

I went for a short loop today on the Kat. I usually zero my trip meter at fill ups, but this time added some from a jug I had left over from a track day. Didn't fill the tank all the way up having went for a 60 mile loop last week, figured I had near a full tank - 60 miles. This day happens to be the anniversary of my last wreck 25 years ago 9/20/88.

About 40 miles into the ride, I feel sputtering, so I switch to reserve on the Pingel, still doesn't feel ideal. Change my route to the nearest gas station. Skip the Am/Pm, head to Chevron, though lately I've been running ethanol free.

Then I realize my gas cap key is in my other coat I'm not wearing. Hmmm what to do? I rummage thru my tank bag finding a small Swiss army knife, fussing around with it, a small Allen and some nail clippers, nothing is really working. Tried my ignition key, wiggling all around, doesn't feel long enough. This is going on for half an hour, feeling defeated I finally tilt the knife back toward the seat and it releases the cap. I thought for sure the cap was gonna win, but I persevered and it finally let go.

When I pushed it over to the gas pump, I put in 4.872 gallons, with room for a little more but I didn't want to spill any backing up to where my gas cap was.

Rich folks problems , it's another world. Imagine having a second coat that you could afford not to wear - luxury

For about a year and a half I had a weekly commute of 160 miles odd on the Z650 in the dead of Sunday night and way before 24 hour filling stations were invented. Fuel was always tight, so tight that it would almost never have enough in the bowls to start the following morning when I needed the extra two litres carried in the saddlebags.

Do you think you can pick a lock on a safe? Maybe we can go into business together.
Glad you got out of your situation.

The rich guy thing made me laugh. Said coat with key is fraying at the neck line, all front zippers are broken, and I had to drill a hole thru the main zipper to insert a paper clip for zipping on and off.

Various movies crossed my mind regarding the safe cracking. Had I not installed my tank bag with tools before the ride, I'd probably still be stuck there.

I knew I shouldn't have bought that one, but the chrome was in such good shape. Sorry!
