Parking Lot Praise and Admiration for my 1983 GS850 GL

Over the weekend I rode my GS850 to my part time job at Sears -
The weather was fabulous and I left early and rode around rather than report to the store early.
As I dismounted and was removing my helmet, & gear, a pick up truck pulled up right behind me.
The driver rolled his window down , and the truck full of people all leaned over and craned their necks to get a glimpse of my bike.

    Then the driver excitedly said (loudly) "..Now THAT'S a bike ! - %$#* those Harleys ! "

    I responded with "Thanks --It's a1983."

He shouted back ..."Oh, I KNOW what it is... I used to have one." Then turning to the curious folks inside the truck "Mine was red and these are awesome!"

He was really truly excited to see one still on the road. I casually mentioned "It has about 30,00 miles on it and it is a resurrection I am doing right now. I found it and have been refurbishing it for about a year now"

He looked at the bike longingly and said sadly..." ..never sell it..."

    And he pulled away...

Cool story. My 1150es is just getting to that point. In 15 years of ownership, ive only recieved comments from those in the know. In the last 2 riding seasons ive been getting more comments from non gs types. I ride that bike, not to please others, but because I love it. Its still cool however, to receive a little appreciation.

When consulting the magic 8 ball for advice, one must first ask it "will your answers be accurate?"

Don't you just love those reactions! I've had people (literally) run up to me saying "wow what year is that" or "man I had one just like that etc etc. Even a few Bandios at bike nite here have come up and told me, nice looking old bike, I started out riding on one kind of like that. I smile.

When I was doing 60 in the left lane, a guy in the center lane leans out his pickup truck and shouts, "You got gold, man, gold. That's the best motorcycle ever made!"

I never realized guys in pickup trucks were so smart.

There is a guy around here walks his six small dogs. I mean he really walks his dogs. He is everywhere all the time and each time we meet he comes over and says' That's a lovely bike , never sell it'.

Nobody's ever made nice comments about my 850GL, probably because it looks like a friggen' heap!

But the 750E does bring smiles and the occasional thumbs-up from a cager. Lots of waves from sportbikers and cruisers alike too, I assume due to the lunchbox headlight.
