    my GS stroy.

One day I was workn in my garage when I noticed my neighbor wheeling this 83 GS 650 GL up to the road with a for sale sign on it. So I jumped on this old 5hp mini bike that I had and rode over to inspect the GS. He said I like the mini bike.. I said I like this GS...wanna trade....DONE DEAL! We traded and I took the GS home and tried to get it started but no go. It set and every summer I would mess with it till one year I said..enough. Tore the carbs off, got a clymer manual and went to work getting this gs back in to road worth condition. Carbs and tank had "silt" in them and after getting that all cleaned, she fired up, but still had issues. tore the carbs off 4 more times and had to "red koat" the gas tank. That seem to solve the problem. carbs have not been off since. I now ride her 2000 miles a year here in the Susquehanna valley of PA. Great bike. I added a windshield I found in a local bike shop, that was returned because the owner didnt like it...$40. Added a clam shell trunk...changed out the fork seals about a month ago. New tires and brakes. Other than that she been a great machine.

          Welcome......good trade!
I spent summer vacations growing up with the family not terribly far from you in the Pine Creek Valley.
My father was a member of a hunting club that had a cabin on the creek.
We still try to take a yearly cycle trip there.

There is some nice riding up there. Enjoy.

            Sixty,

            Welcome to GSR.

            Good story. Thanks for posting.

            ANd thanks for picture.
I see in the picture that the petcock is in the PRIme position.
You do not want to leave it in that position.
(Down is ON which is really automatic if the vacuum line is functional. Forward is REServe, which is also automatic.)

My parents are from the Allegheny valley area and Johnstown area. Was there every year as a kid.
Oh... Susquehanna.... that is not near Pittsburg. I was thinking of the Monongahela river as being near the Allegheny.

I have since figured out the petcock and run it in the "ON" position. I still have some other issues to correct. I just wish it was an 1100 with a 6 speed....LOL.
