From the factory XN's never could reach full boost. I installed an adjustable waste gate bleed valve in the right storage pocket which essentially let's the turbocharger reach full boost (I believe it will get close to 12.5 psi before the injectors shut down). That primitive valve makes a sizable difference in performance.
Like all Suzukis based on the GS four-cylinder platform the charging system is a major weak point. I'm on my third or fourth R/R and stator (I lost count). Don't know why Kawasaki and Yamaha had this figured out years ago and Suzuki and Honda struggled with it for so long – and never came up with a fix! Besides that it's a very reliable bike. There are almost NO parts available for it, so when something breaks that can't be replaced or jerry-rigged I'll probably part the old girl out.
The only mod besides the waste gate bleed valve is a K&N air filter which adds a little noise to what is otherwise a relatively quiet motorcycle. The FI system, though primitive, works flawlessly. Never a problem with it. The time to buy one is when you see one – enjoy riding it knowing that you can always sell it for what you paid, or more, down the road. I ride in the New York City Metro area, so if you see an XN85 on the road you can be sure it's me in the saddle. --Steve
