Ride Report - Katana Australia State of Origin Ride

The next big combined GSR and Katana Australia ride was yesterday but due to the weather and other circumstances ended up being really just a Katana Australia ride, although several are members of both forums like me of course.

Most people were heading for Armidale over in NSW to meet up with the NSW and Victorian Katana Australia members and were staying overnight, but I could only make it part of the way and was then heading back home via some twisty roads. Two other guys also couldn't go the whole way, one pulled out at Beaudesert, and the other rode back with me and on home to Caboolture.

The weather prediction was showers with some rain, but it turned out to be rain, rain, more rain, a shower or two, some mist, and some heavy rain.

The route we took was from Arana Hills (Northside riders meet up), to Rocklea (group meet up), then onto Rathdowney and Casino via Kyogle.

Casino is where Jesse (the other Kat rider) and I parted ways with the group, and they continued on to Armidale. We headed to Urbenville, Beaudesert, and home. The original plan was longer than that but the weather made it slow going and exhausting so we chose to skip the last couple of legs, plus my hands and feet were getting a bit chilled from the constant wet.

I discovered Lyons Rd for the first time (from Rathdowney through to Kyogle) and that's a fun road! There were a couple of bridges that were close to going under water but not quite. The level was high enough the water was splashing onto the road, probably another inch and it would've been flowing over.

I also discovered Woodenbong Rd for the first time, and that's a horrendous piece of tarmac! It's incredibly bumpy as I had heard, but much worse than I had anticipated. My confidence was constantly killed in corners by the bumps and it made me extremely glad I spent the $$$ on the Ikon suspension. The water was over the road in a couple of places too but only a little so we didn't have to turn back.

All in all it was a great day despite the rain and I'm glad I went.

Here's some pic's I took, and I have a few hours of video yet to go through and edit as well.

cool stuff pete! How do you get by being around all those kat's without giving in and getting one yourself?! I don't think I'd be able to resist the temptation...

Cheers Tim, and I tell ya' it gets harder every time I ride with this bunch.

I've been offered several times to have a run on a couple but aside from one trip around the block on John's Purple Haze I haven't accepted the offer... too afraid I'd wanna just keep riding!

I have my Kat plan, just need to be patient and hope it works out... this rain is killing it at the moment though as I haven't gotten enough dry time to get out and get the fence moved so I can start the shed.

Great pics! It is awesome to see all those Kats (especially spokers) out on the road. I have never seen more than one at a time here in the states, and that is usually mine. There are two at the Barber Museum though.

            Thanks,
            Joe

"Krusty's inner circle is a completely unorganized group of grumpy individuals uninterested in niceties like factual information. Our main purpose, in an unorganized fashion, is to do little more than engage in anecdotal stories and idle chit-chat while providing little or no actual useful information. And, of course, ride a lot and have tons of fun.....in a Krusty manner."

              Mate,
Woodenbong is a classic road because once you've ridden it you'll never forget it and you'll always have a funny story to tell.

Cheers Joe, and yeah it's always good to get out with the Kat guys!

If I join them for their typical Saturday morning ride I can usually be guaranteed at least two and sometimes as many as four or five of them out in the wild.

I have plans to add another to the fleet when my time comes, hopefully within the next year.

Haha you got that straight Max! I thought it was what everyone referred to as "Bumpybong" as well, but that's a whole different road that's even worse apparently

Yeah it was a good day but would've been so much better in the sun.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for next time...
