    Pre-Sturgis Week

As I mentioned in my Camping thread I am thinking of making a trip back to Washington State for my high school reunion. My planned route had me coming back through South Dakota around the 9th of August so I could see Mt Rushmore. However, I realized this morning that Sturgis is during that same week so if I am going to see the Memorial I think I should make it the first part of my trip instead. As that will be the week prior to Sturgis, what are the roads generally like? Are they still as crowded as people start to trickle in or can I get through the area without major headaches?

From what I hear, the week before is about as bad as "Bike Week"! Seems lots of people think they will avoid the crowds and come early. Had some friend that went last year 2 weeks early and it was still too crowded for them!

When I die, just cremate me and put me in my GS tank. That way I can go through these carbs, one more time!https://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/core/images/smilies/cool.png

Went to Sturgis in '86 when attendence was microscopic compared to what it is today. It was too crowded for my liking back then, I bet it's a nightmare now!

The last time I was there was maybe 7-8 years ago and I was quoted a price of $329.00 per night for a hotel that normally goes for around $69/night. Just passing on what I remember.

Last time I went was 2010. We had 3 people, 3 bikes and 3 small tents. Changed campgrounds everyday. We were on the road with breakfast in us by 8am and the crowds were very tolerable. We parked for the day by 2-3 for lunch when the roads got crowded and the temps went up. They always found room for us some where. Avoid the Buffalo Chip like the plague...
