How can I tell what is the "true" year of manufacture for my Suzuki GS750L??

    Hi

I supposedly have a 1979 Suzuki GS750L per the State of Michigan Certificate of Title. When ordering a petcock recently it became apparent that my motorcycle could perhaps be a 1980. How can I know for sure what year my motorcycle really is and what month it was manufactured?? Is it possible that the year on the Certificate of Title is wrong?? Any help would be appreciated.

It's tough if you don't have the mfg tag on the headstock, and yes, it's fairly common that a bike's original registration or title is inaccurate. I'm sure somebody will chime in with other info for you. Bear in mind, any mfg date after June, July, or August, is usually considered, by default, to be described as the first versions of the next years model.

Thanks your info. It helped. The mfg tag on the headstock indicated that I have a Suzuki GS750E with a mfg date of 4/79. This is somewhat weird. One of the sideplates on my motorcycle when I bought it read Suzuki GS750L. So the year is correct on the Certificate of Title. I made an slight error in what I shared with you above as the Certificate of Title does not indicate what model I have.

Just out of curiousity, what is the difference between the E series and the L series??

      Thanks for the help

        Just a few differences.

        750E:

        750L:

The L shown is an '80 model, but still shows the differences between the E and the L.

        The E has:
        front axle inline with forks
all gauges combined into one module
        7" headlight
        "normal" handlebars
        larger gas tank
        straight(er) seat surface
tail light covered with painted bodywork
        longer mufflers

        The L has:
        leading axle
        individual speedo and tach
        6" headlight
        taller 'buckhorn' handlebars
        smaller gas tank
very pronounced difference in seat height
tail light mounted on chrome rear fender
        shorter mufflers with different sound
        fatter, smaller-diameter rear tire

Other than that, they are pretty much the same bike.

HEY STEVE. I AM GETTING CONFUSED.

MY HEADSTOCK MFG TAG INDICATES THAT I HAVE A SUZUKI GS750E MANUFACTURED IN 4/79; HOWEVER, MY MOTORCYCLE DEFINITELY HAS:

          a leading axle
          an individual speedo and tach
          a 6" headlight
a very pronounced difference in seat height
a tail light mounted on a chrome rear fender

(I DID NOT TAKE A CLOSER LOOK TO DETERMINE IF MY MOTORCYCLE HAS THE OTHER TRAITS INDICATED FOR THE GS750L MODEL)

          SO WHAT GIVES???

It's possible someone rebuilt the bike transplanting parts.

VINs were standardized in the early 1980s.
For Suzukis made prior to that you usually can determine the model year by looking up your VIN in lists Suzuki provided.

              Per the lists, GS750L VINs:
              for 1979 "N" model: frames start @ 700016 & engines start @ 74016
              for 1980 "T" model: frames start @ 700016 & engines start @ 100097

              http://www.ozebook.com/compendium/su...-nos/page3.gif

The starting frame VIN for both years has the same number.
This may be because the first part of the VIN differed as in "GS750-700016" vs. "GS750L-700016".
(Or maybe the list has a typo.)

If the VIN has the second "7" (part of the 7xxxxx) then you have the L model frame.
Otherwise look at the links to figure out what you have.

Per info on SuzukiCycles.org you can tell the model year based on differences in the cylinder head & tank/side cover decals.

Post a few pictures. Ignition switch, instruments and a side view should do it.
