    Snake oil Molybdenum Disulfide turns out is seems to work.

    So this relates to any final drive I should think. But its related to a recent need to change out the final drive seal in my K Bike.
    76 dollars for a seal I hate you BMW for your rapacious pricing and bad engineering.

    Anyway the original spec gear lub is NLA and apparently never was in NA So I ordered me some Liqui Moly whiz bang synth and for the hell of it a 50 gram tube of their MoS2 additive.
    I did this as the lube I drained clearly had a grey substance in it and I was unsure if it was the BMW labeled lube having it from source or added by a keen previous owner.

    After surviving the hell of changing the lube. BMW thinks its a good idea to have to remove the brake caliper and wheel to do such a simple thing. More BMW hate.
    I went for a short drive to check the seal was working and that the final drive was ok. I was astonished when I placed my hand on the pumpkin ish bit. It was barely warm to the touch.
    It has always been very warm and on hot days painfully hot.

    So yeah get some snake oil.
    ANd never buy a BMW

        No snake oil.
        Moly has been a proven low friction lubricant for donkeys years,.
        Ever heard of Molyslip which is one of the most famous and oldest brands of Moly products on the market and has been around since the 1930's ?

          At less than 20CAD per 50g tube its close to miraculous. The reduced heat blew my mind.
          if its synchro safe im dropping some into my ratchety Jeep tranny. Its miserable but apparently a model specific foible.

          BTW never buy a Jeep.

            Never doubted moly worked, just always confused how much (what %) moly was adequate. Can be found anywhere from 2% to 80% & many don't mention how much, just says liquid moly. Any idea what is OK? I read quite a bit over on a Honda ST site & it seems they have the same question.

              It's ok to use in any engine, gearbox or diff etc .
              Just don't put it in engines with wet clutches.

                I read a ratio somewhere stating 50 g was enough for 4 liters of lube.
                I tried to gauge the amount based on the 180 ml of lube needed for my refill but the increments on my dollar store squeeze bottle were of little help.
                I thought I added 5 grams. I do know the lube went from clear amber to greyish black.
                had a sheen similar to metal laden old oil.
                I suppose it is akin to metal.

                  I bought a new Suzuki 650E back in the early '80s. The gear shifting was rough. The dealer couldn't fix it. They recommended that I use a Moly additive. It worked wonders. I wasn't racing it but did ride it hard. I had no problems with my clutch. I have used it in all my bikes since with no problems. That's my experience though.

                    Have a newtome Kawasaki GTR1000/Concours and could not find the 60% moly lube, but a friendly BMW dealer told me they use the same lube for all their shafties.
                    Not for sale to the public, but he was kind enough to give me enough for several lube jobs.

                    This is a grey substance.
