    I fought the iPhone . . . . (photo transferring to computer)

Isn't there a song about that...? (The Clash, in the 70s, I think.)

Ever since I got iPhone (5c) (in 2013, I think) I have been transferring photos from the iPhone to computer hard drive using FileExplorer (MyComputer), by hand,
Connect to the iPhone with USB cable, use MyComputer, and look at the iPhone the same as if it were a thumbdrive or something, open the InternalStorage, and then the DCIM directory, and then whatever next directory, then select (Contrl-Click) and copy (Contrl-C) all the files, and then open my Picture directory on my harddrive, open directory I created for the month and then Paste (Contrl-V) all the files.

Could talk about how I organised the directorys on my hard drive, but that is not my point here. I know there are various file managment packages available specific to photos, but that isnot my point here either.

Nor do I care to get into all the monoply of Apple and Google and all the privacy issues and all that.

The situation of accessing the photos on the Iphone with the windows FileExplorer is the aspect of all this that has my attention at the moment.

Over the years it seems that either Apple or maybe microsoft-windows has changed things from time to time, that caused difficultys along the way.
As an example: At one point, a couple years ago, I was having trouble, it seemed that all the DCIM directorys would show up as "empty" and I called Apple Tech support. THe guys asked a few questions to verify what I was doing, and then he said something like "that functionality is not a supported function, so I cant help you." So, at that point I though I they had found some way to defeat me, so that the directorys on the iPhone would appear to be empty to windowsFileExplorer. Or maybe I was just being overly suspicious. A few days later I noticed that some function (i dont recall what) wanted me to sign in with my Apple Password when It didnt really make sense, but I did anyway, then that function worked, and I noticed that I started getting adds on google on my computer about things I searched on my phone (ah, so, apple and/or google then knew me on the phone was the same guy as me on the computer).... and the photo file access on my phone started to work again.

And over the years the file directory structor on the iphone has changed. But I got used to that.
ANother Recent change was that if edit the photo (say, crop or rotate) on iphone, the phone stores the editied photo by the same name (say img_1234.jpg) but in an other directory, so when copy it to the computer hardrive it conflicts with the original photo file name.

Well, now I am back to the photodirectorys on the iphone appearing to be empty to windowsFileExplorer, and has been that way for a few weeks. ANd am not finding a way around/past that. I figure with the last iOS update they figured some way to finally defeat me. I fought the IPhone ... and the Iphone won.

My only way around this, to get a photo for iphone to computer is I can email a photo from my phone to myself, and then oipen the email on computer and download the photo. But that is annoying and clunbersom and time consuming jst to get one or two pics. ANd not suitable for the dozens of pics from last couple weeks.

I suppose I need to start figuring out the Google Photos. . . . or Something.
    Any recomendations??

I've not had any of the problems I think you are explaining, but don't completely understand some of the terminology. Probably why I'm still answering when it rings and punch in the #'s to make calls on my little out dated flip phone. So far very few problems...Though I haven't found a reasonable way to delete those text messages, Gladly they're causing no problems so I just leave them there..

Yeah I too have black tiles where my pciare. I think its the lack of software on the PC. Means little to me but your an ardent life chronicler.
Ul;timately your questions would be best asked on the apple forums. The members are fully indoctrinated into the cult and as a bonus Apple minions can offer actual expert help.

ANy that you get here might result in permanent loss of data.

+1 per above... or Google it in various ways. "iphone (model here) photo transfer to windows" or the like. And if there's a setting, organize the search engine for "most recent" or "within the last year"( I can't remember if google has this but some do)

I remember having to install a couple of hundred mb of apple software to get into an iphone 5. Not happy. And finally getting it under my control, the battery swelled up catastrophically.

Remember: It's not your phone. It belongs to them. And you do too, as long as you use it. It's a tangled web and cutting the net to get your head out gets harder evry year, by intent.

I use my i'phone for my internet using the USB cable on my laptop. When i want to download photos from phone to lap top i connect the USB cable and when the phone popup pops up i have a choice of 3 things.

            1 Charge only
            2 transfer files android auto
            3 Transfer photos.

            hit tranfer photos.

On my laptop, (windows 10), i click on "Device and printers", (shortcut on desktop), then a camera Icon from my i'phone is there. Right click Click on that and this box opens.

Dave, apple did change things a few models ago and now you can only do it by uploading your photos to the iCloud and then accessing them on your computer by going to iCloud.com, clicking on photos (after logging in) and downloading to your computer.

I can show you if you’d like to call me on FaceTime; or I can take some pictures and make instructions later this weekend.

THanks for all the descriptions and screen shots.
That IS essentaily what I described that I have been doing, just that I start out with "my computer" first and then select the phone, then internal stporage and then DCIM and so on....

Oh, I should have said I am using iPhone 8. (I see now the 14 are whats new now.)

My recent difficultys started about 3 weeks ago.

                      iCloud

Okay, I should look into that.
At present I just have the basic minumum iCloud (so can backup phone once).

So, iCloud is what I need to look into.
Okay, THanks. Will check more into that before I pester you. Thanks!

Really not up on Apple architecture but is there any reason you couldn't use a USB dongle/card reader on the phone and transfer the photos that way. Needing an internet connection to something so basic as copy a file to a computer is just plain stupid and I can't believe that even Apple would do that to it's users.
