THanks for all the descriptions and screen shots.
That IS essentaily what I described that I have been doing, just that I start out with "my computer" first and then select the phone, then internal stporage and then DCIM and so on....
I reread your original post after i posted, then resized your description was basically what I reposted. Dah. Also i have an Android not i'phone.

I used to have a Wifi modem but it packed it in. Living in a regional area it meant i had to buy another modem for $80.00. I dropped my landline, added band width to my phone of 30G per month on a mobile and internet plan, saved a bunch of money. Using the USB, (could do Bluetooth), I tethered my phone to the laptop and the phone is basically acting as a modem.

      iCloud

Okay, I should look into that.
At present I just have the basic minumum iCloud (so can backup phone once).

So, iCloud is what I need to look into.
Okay, THanks. Will check more into that before I pester you. Thanks!
Well, I'll just post this anyway and let you go from there if you want. Again, Apple changed their processes a few models/IOS' ago and though it can be a pain I've dealt with it okay.

First, go into your ICloud settings under your profile and Select Photos

IMG_6857 by Scott Baker, on Flickr

Ensure the slider for photos is showing green

IMG_6858 by Scott Baker, on Flickr

Your photos will then upload to the iCloud; keep in mind that there is a slight few minute delay if you try to access the iCloud immediately after taking the pictures.

On your computer, use your favorite browser to go to www.icloud.com and log in with your icloud account (this is the account and password you set up when you activated your phone)

IMG_6859 by Scott Baker, on Flickr

If it has been awhile since you last accessed the website, allow the access on your phone and then enter the 6-digit authentication code displayed on the phone into the website

Select the picture you want to download and click the cloud icon in the upper right corner. You can select multiple photos to download but it will do so as a zip file that you will need to extract

IMG_6862 by Scott Baker, on Flickr

Select the folder where you want to save the file(s)

IMG_6863 by Scott Baker, on Flickr

You can now edit it on your computer as normal and upload to your favorite hosting site

I've been thinking this for quite a while... These things can do almost anything "IFFFF" you know what buttons to push. How the heck can anyone remember all that stuff.

Thank you ! Mr Scott Cowboy !

At the moment I don’t have any iCloud subscription (other than the one time phone backup -if THAT is iCloud, I keep getting message about insufficient space to backup.)
I will study what you have provided. Thanks for the screen shots and explanations.

It’s already a part of your phone from the start, your login and password created it and yes, the backups can be saved there but then you run into the problem you have. I always save my backups to my computer which saves that headache.

This says you can plug it in and use a USB stick to save them to. I have the same problem as you Dave, been meaning to try one of these for ages to see if it sorts it out. I have the same thing for my IPAD which works well but it's USB-C not lighting......

Apple do something similar but it only talks about working in the reverse direction to the one we want.....

Oh and you should know that on the later Iphones Apple has changed the picture format which is a real pain for anyone using older software..... It's all to do with the million lenses they now have and all the filters, live photos etc.

I do know some about that.
If go to settings Camera/Format and select "Most Compatible" instead of the other obscure selections, the phone then stores pictures in JPG (instead of HEIF or HEVC type files).

hahah. Oh yes they would. They want to look at them too.... That said, on Linux, I can get into many I-things via usb , but it isn't helpful for Dave... There's probably a way in windows too but I don't keep up with I-stuff foibles.

a variation on the solution offered seems simple enough. Email the pix somewhere( full size), and download them on the computer...but again, I don't know if this works for I-junk.

Yes I looked at that too. It does sort or seem to work but the images come out with the jpeg filename not the jpg one for me. Not a huge deal (you can change it if you need to) just another stupid unnecessary part of it all.....

By the way one other thing I haven't looked into yet.... Amazon Prime has free unlimited image storage. I'm not sure what their terms are (i.e. who owns images) or whether you can easily download to a computer in bulk from there but might be a route if you have prime anyway.

I have not tried uploading any pictures recently for the purpose of saving or archiving, but I do occasionally take a picture to prove something at work. I have no problem accessing my phone (iPhone 13) with my work laptop (Win 10) by using File Explorer. I have noticed that the pictures on the phone are now sorted into monthly directories, which makes it rather handy. I have not noticed a difference with edited pictures, as I try to minimize the need for editing when I take the picture. I will have to try transferring larger quantities to see if I have any of the problems you are experiencing.

                        HA !

I should know, when dont have repeatable symptoms, then cant really say is one specific problem.
SOmetimes somputer would say "not recognizse USB device", and sometimes it would say "no files" in the daily/monthy folder, and sometimes the DCIM folder would indicate "no files".

                        Ha!
                        Last night it started working.
THis was after a recent computer restart.
Will see how long it keeps going.

Thanks guys. I so ned to keep learning about various alternatives for xfering pic files from iphone (I have an 8).
