The Coronation and the Royals
Well, I'm glad that's over. It pretty much dominated PBS this weekend. I have never given much thought to the monarchy one way or the other but it occurred to me that we do have have here on GSR a fair number of members from the UK and commonwealth countries. I am curious how they view the existence and role of the royals. Vital tradition? Relic? Important tourist draw? Waste of money? Yay? Nay? Who cares?
I know this can be a headed subject in some quarters but I think we can keep it out of Vortex.

I like having a monarch . Back in the 80's I was among the thousands that greeted the Queen when she sailed into Vancouver Harbour on the Royal Yacht Britannia . { Though I'm pretty sure she flew here and boarded the yacht on arrival } ..... However I am well aware that support for the monarchy is waning in my country but to me the monarchy represents the Commonwealth whom I am proud to be a member ...... Besides the UK pays for it and the rest of us reap the benefits ...... On a side note the new King is well respected among our First Nations as he spent quite a bit of time in the Kanadian north.... { which is a Hell of a lot higher than they give our government } ......Old age and treachery will beat youth and skill every time1983 GS 750

Queen Elizabeth has been more than a strong figure in my thoughts of the monarchy since I (and my whole school class,) saw her in Toronto when I was a child.
She devoted her entire adult life to the peoples of Britain and the Commonwealth and she earned respect around the globe.
Will Charles....or, perhaps, CAN Charles come close to the standard of excellence that his mother did before him?
For many of us, it seems the biggest obstacle to his future and that of the monarchy is the foul and disgusting public antics of his brother Harry.

I assume you actually mean Andrew.
Must admit I was slightly taken aback to hear of his antics, but when he paid hush money in the millions I became sure there was something to hush up.
Prior to that I couldn't have given less of a fig about him.

And...even though Andrew has been his own worst enema, yes I did mean Harry
No matter what excuse is put forward, his behaviour has been disgusting in every way, and why he allows his wife to whip him is beyond my understanding..Last edited by argonsagas; 05-18-2023, 10:28 PM.Bertrand Russell: 'Men are born ignorant, not stupid. They are made stupid by education.'

My wife is English and has many family members in the U.K. They can't stand the Monarchy. Does Camilla really think she owns all those Jewels. It's disgraceful for a modern western society with the homeless and housing problems they have to have Royalty that own 100,000's of thousands of acres of land. That does include the U.S. too, but for different reasons. I spent 2.5 months in England when I was 16 years old. I am told that England no longer exists. I went to a concert the day I arrived, they way all these Lords, etc. were treated, I personally found distasteful. A lot of younger people though the Royalty would be something of the past when they grew up. I just wonder if these people really think that the U.K.'s bounty, that they took from the countries they dominated, is theirs now? All of us know that ultimately, when we leave this life, we leave with what we came with. Same goes with all these other countries with kings and such, except the ones who just use them as a tradition, and have no power. Culture is culture. Sounds contradictory, but the amount of land the new "King" owns in Scotland is obscene. IMHO.

I see your misogyny is alive and well . Haven't seen it since your former Premier was defeated ..... Moderators please get rid of this post . There is no room for derogatory statements towards women on GSR .... Not to mention he just pulled it out of the Campfire .....
I believe the name-calling and deliberate hate-mongering you just used is not permitted anywhere on GSR,. but perhaps you misunderstood the subject matter:
Harry was born into a royal family and for his entire life it has been his responsibility to observe each and every protocol applicable to that role.
Whether or not be was dedicated to fulfilling his responsibilities throughout his life is irrelevant as the subject is what occurred after he married..
In bringing her into the royal family Harry had the full responsibility to ensure both he and his new wife observed each and every one of the royal requirements and commitments to ensure the family image was not diminished by any public uttering, action or spectacle.
Instead, the opposite has happened and despite his lifelong responsibility to prevent it happening, he permitted it.
EDIT:
Sorry......He allowed it,Last edited by argonsagas; 05-21-2023, 10:11 PM.Bertrand Russell: 'Men are born ignorant, not stupid. They are made stupid by education.'
