    Somebody needs a new ruler!

It doesn't seem to matter what brand of tent you buy, the zippers are going to be the thing that eventually fails.

Last winter the Cabela's four man tent that I used for quite a few seasons finally gave up the ghost and I needed to get a replacement. Since there where few affordable choices available within a reasonable distance of where I was when that happened I decided that a $40 Walmart four man tent would be "good enough" until it too finally crapped out, previous experience told me it would hold up for 3-4 months.
Sure enough over the weekend that one bit the dust. Target was running a sale on the six man Coleman Flatwoods II for only $68 so I pulled the trigger.

The Walmart four man tent measures 8x8 at ground level with that size getting progressively getting smaller as you come upward due to the slope of the walls. By the time you inflate an air mattress to it's height of 8" there's barely enough room to lay down without touching the sides. Not great but it gets the job done.

Set up the replacement 10x10 yesterday evening and holy crap, WAY more tent than I really needed! Heck, this thing is tall enough for even ME at 6'4" to stand up in. I haven't actually pulled out a tape to do any measuring but my guess is someone needs to check their ruler, this thing is colossal and for only $28 more than the Walmart version I can tell the zippers are of a much higher quality. We'll see how small I can pack this thing back down when I leave in a couple of weeks, like I said, more tent than I really need.

We found a nice tent in the clearance aisle at Walmart. $50 cheap. Even has a covered entry area big enough for a couple camp chairs. I could probably fit it on the bike if I felt like glamping.

As mentioned the zipper is shot. It would get wet in there real quick and even when it was dry the ants took refuge in there big time. Huge black colored ones.

Years ago has a few walmart tents and different things like zippers and seams started to fail.

I have a fairly large coleman tent that ive had for twenty plus years and everything is great, no zipper failure, seams all good.

Only difference between it and other tents in the past is ihave taken better care if it.

I have a more expensive two person tent that I bought for motorcycle camping....triangle shaped , not much room and is really a one man tent.

Know a family that has land southeast of Lebanon missouri, and I used to camp there in the winter month which I prefer, no bugs, no crazy heat And humidity.

Lots of fire wood, so I don't even use a tent there, maybe a tarp lean to style wind block and a fire, tents are just escape from bugs..lol

I guess if I was camping in campgrounds I want a tent for some privacy.

Fortunately I know of a couple state/conservation campgrounds that have a lot if trees and the some of the sites seem fairly isolated.

I never expected the Coleman tent to last as long as it has, been a few times when it was left up for two weeks.

Do I see a Coleman petrol stove there?.
Have one close on thirty years. Great piece of kit.
O-rings disintegrated shortly after we got it.
            I blamed the ethanol.

I just tried to get rid of my old Coleman white gas Stove and Lantern at garage sale. Didn't even get a look. I've replaced the plunger leather seals on both and they work great. I've used them quite a bit. They were my dad's. I know they're older than me (I'm 52). Guess I'll pass them along to my kids.

Regarding tents: I'm not convinced that you "get what you pay for". Some less expensive tents are actually really decent.

Yep, sure is, a Coleman 413G with a 7-73 date code. Bought it new in the box for $30 about a year ago and ran nothing but White Gas until I ran out one time with the closest source about 50 miles away. Tried plain Jane gasoline right out of the bikes tank and have never used White Gas since.

Had heard you get a car exhaust smell from it which is why I never tried it. Plain gasoline heats up WAY faster in the generator and burns not only hotter but cleaner soot wise. At $11 a gallon White Gas just isn't worth it although with a ten plus year shelf life it would be good to keep on hand for power outages and the like for a backup.

As to tent quality I'm hard pressed to spend much on something I've never seen set up in person. If I'd have known the one I brought was so generously sized I probably would have opted for the four man but with the six man on sale at the same price I said what the heck.

Both the Cabela's and Wentzel tents I've used in the past served me well over a year each with what I would consider an "upper low end" price. (under $100) Personally I can't justify going for the Big Agnes $500 dollar tent without ever seeing one or talking to an honest owner who would use it the way I do, as my everyday home. Hate to go cheap and waste resources in the process but if they'd put an honest functioning zipper in these things it wouldn't be an issue.

Well, one good thing about this thread is it got me thinking about hiking/camping.

last two times camping in southern Missouri, everybody was talking about bears being all around now...lol

I might set up my three tents in backyard, and see how they're holding up, been a year since I've had coleman tent up and probably three years since the osprey tent was put up.

I got this coleman lantern( in a nice plastic case even) out of a car that was going to the crusher, while at part time job in senior year high school, along with a Colman thing for hanging it in a tree and a buck knife.still have all three.

The only place I saw Bears down that way was at Cobb Ridge about 25 miles SE of Springfield. It was only once and a cub at that, the camp hosts freaked out and shut the place down.

A seriously decent place for motorheads to go, it's at the trailhead of an 80 mile OHV trail and there's plenty of bikes in there on the weekend. Very much a family type environment with kids riding their electric and 50cc toys around. $10 a night with showers, flush toilets, good water, the works. More if you want electric.

Ive camped at a lot of places in Southern Missouri, can't remember what year I went I'd noticed a lot of "beware of bear" signs all over the place, some places had seminars about bear safety.

Funny thing is I was camping in a fairly isolated spot, walked a out a mile down a trail just to get started into privately owned land, ot was getting dark and thick timber to the south of the trail and I started hearing some animal grunt and stomp around...
                      first thought was...BEAR..LOL.

think I've seen some big cats from a distance, second time I was telling some locals and they ask where , I told them and they said a friend had told them he'd seen one the day before in same spot.

older neighbor ,who hunts says he not worried about bear or big cats , he says they're like any other critter and usually run away from people.

I've seen and heard more cats lately too, bobcat was just outside my tent about three weeks ago trying to get into the cooler, thought it was a raccoon and figured shining my super bright headlamp at him from the tent window would scare it off. Imagine my surprise what lit up instead!

Hah, funny you should mention that. A couple of months back I camped near some forest service folks who where in from out of town helping with prescribed burns. They grabbed up a rattlesnake and brought it back to camp for dinner and invited me over. I'll personally attest to an old saying as being valid: You gotta know how to cook it right, tastes like chicken!

Camping in Page Arizona years ago we found a very realistic fake Rattler and tossed it in a buddies sleeping bag. Let's just say the prank did not go over well.
