Many forget that Pete Rose popularized the head-first slide in baseball. It's so common now. When I was a kid playing little-league, that's what we called it - the Pete Rose slide. Our coaches didn't like it, but we did it anyway. I met him at the Vet when I was 7 or 8 when he played for the Phillies, signed a pin for me. Still have it somewhere.

He mattered, and suggesting otherwise is the kind of armchair BS that anyone hoisting a beer with an opinion can do. It doesn't take away from his importance to the sport.

No doubt not in the hall just for punishment... My opinion he should be put in the Hall but with big captions explaining both the pos. and neg. parts of his career. Hard to imagine a Baseball Hall of Fame and a player of that caliber not there.

I really like the way you put that and I agree. It would be interesting to have a showcase of how the sports industry can bring out both the best and worst in great talent.

The posted consequence of betting in baseball is "permanent" ban. Not "lifetime" ban. It will be interesting to see if MLB makes an exception, but I think it will take some time, if ever.

And yet, scum like Deshaun Watson can exist for far too long while sexually assaulting women right and left.

I say that as a lifetime Cleveland fan.
