What might you see on a bike of mine?

    Steering dampener
    Oil cooler
    Radar detector

    and new for this year...

    Fork brace!

And that's it! I know some of you are going to tell me about how much tassels add to your riding experience, but you're wasting your breath.

Rob, Honest question. Being familiar with your story. Not wanting to rub salt in it. Are you planning a return to riding?

No. The last time I drove a car, I totaled it (large Cadillac). The last time I rode a motorcycle, I totaled it (new Sportster). I really don't miss the responsibility. Plus $200 a month to park the bikes, $200 a month to park the car, insurance, registration, etc.

And I can't upshift with my left foot. Of course, the most beautiful bike in the world, the '72 Sportster, has a right side shift. Know where I can get one for less than $100k?

So really, Rob, the #1 item that is "not on your bike" will be you. The rest of us will continue riding with whatever set of equipment we choose.

Exactly! I'm reading Zen and the Art and Mr. Pirsig felt the same way.

Traveling and living around the world, I've found that Americans buy bikes as toys more than anywhere else, due to price and income I suppose. Ride till they need maintenance then put them in the corner of the garage (hmm, that's where I come in - 15K miles? nearly free? OK just refresh them). In Europe, Asia, Australia, and NZ they use motorcycles more for transportation and outfit them accordingly for duty, if that's their need. Not a lot of cruisers, it's more substance over 'style' (yeech on cruisers 'style' IMO tho). I got my '51 BMW R51/2 with sidecar in Pireaus Greece in '83, and saw others still being used as pickup trucks, carrying bricks and lumber in the narrow city streets. Overseas I saw more tasteful and useful mods. I guess no JC Whitney catalogs. Oh, generally speaking, they also wear proper gear. America is immature about bikes IMO. It's mostly image and bravado. Not that the same isn't true elsewhere, it's just overdone here. 'Murica.

Harleys? Long topic but they were crap for years, now they are fine bikes. I rode with guys on their HDs and they broke down and scattered parts as badly as my Norton haha. Thankfully a huge influx of yuppies sustained them for a while. Now they make good bikes but their demographic is in the Pleistocene era and it's all downhill from here

Radar detector? I'm surprised they're still around.

Good move. I wondered who'd bought that Muscle Brace.
I have an 1100E fender with its fairly stout internal brace, but I noticed a difference when I fitted an extra brace above it.
