Anyone Get A Cortizone Injection ?

I've had intense pain in my right shoulder for several weeks now. I just finished the process of diagnosis through x-rays. The doctor says I have mild osteo-arthritis . If this is what mild is like I'd hate to see what the non-mild version is like. Because this is like a raw nerve being touched . It is worse overnight and gets a little lesser during the day as I move around . The doctor had mentioned a cortizone shot so that is what I requested. After which I got the rundown .

Can cause bleeding in the muscle

    Doesn't always work

May worsen the situation before it gets better

He kind of put the fear of Gawd in me. But the pain is so bad I'm going to go through with it. The drug store is delivering my dose to me tomorrow morning after which I will book an appointment with my doctor for him to give me the injection.....

Just looking for some reassurance from other members that I am doing the right thing ..... So tell me your experience if you have any to share ?......

It's just cortisone. Not going to kill you. Take the shot and relax. If it helps, great, if it doesn't, nothing lost. The only real concern with cortisone is if you take too much, and the modern medical establishment won't let that happen. Plus, you are old. Don't worry, be happy! Ask them to mix some codeine in with the shot..

My wife had some serious pain in one of her elbows. She got a cortisone injection and it helped a lot.

For the longer term, I can highly recommend a small daily dose of CBD oil. I'm not sure of the legality of Hemp products in Canada but here in Australia there is now a booming market in Hemp products.

CBD oil is not cannabis, therefore it does not contain any THC.

I had no interest in CBD products until I had a total knee replacement a few years ago. I'm now sold on its benefits.

Thanks Syd . That CBD oil sounds interesting . There are several pot stores nearby so I'll ask if they have it......

I went through this appx. 15 yr. ago. Pain was so bad first thing in morn., I had to use the other arm to even lift the bad one. As the morn. went on it gradually got better then same next morn. Doc said we could try Cortisone, may work maybe not, if it does probably won't last long. Guess I's a lucky one, after a couple of weeks pain was completely gone. It stayed gone till last yr., same pain back again. We tried the Cortisone again, results this time OK but not near as good, this time pain is not gone. a lot better, but can constantly feel something isn't right, not bad but aggravating. Use Tylenol every few days when it gets too uncomfortable... No side effects at all. My opinion, give it a try and hope for the best... Drug store delivering it to you, My Doc keeps it in his office, says he uses it fairly often.

Thanks Ed and Rphillips...... I'm going to try it. This was a tele-appointment with the doctor . One of the good things to come out of Covid. I don't have to visit him if he doesn't need to examine me ..... He just caught me off guard with all the disclaimers ....

This story may or may not be helpful. An older fellow I bowled with a few decades ago had a knee that was killing him. He finally agreed to try Cortisone. He said he was sitting on a table in a Hospital gown when the Doctor pulled out what looked like a Horse sized syringe. He said "When I saw that I almost Sh!t myself and when he stuck it in my knee and I felt it scrape bone I Did!"........................

Had it in both my elbows 10 years ago and been fine since . The injection stings a bit and a few hours of pain after .
No pain no gain as they say .

Our injuries sound very similar. Like you I am worse overnight and waking up and better as the day and my movement goes on ..... I just got up so I'm paying for it now. Prescription arrives between nine and one and I will make an appointment for treatment once it arrives ..... I'm hoping to have similar results as you.

My first was quite painful, doc warned me in advance. This last time he rubbed something on site first, waited appx. 5 min. then injected. I's surprised at the lack of pain, not near as bad as the first time... Luck to ya.

Thanks ..... I think I will tell him your story and request he rub whatever is appropriate on the injection site.

Had something going on with my foot once felt like muscle was tearing away from bone or something....cant remember what it was called..athletes are most prone to it from sudden stops and quick movements...from what doc said

I received three shots of cortisone in what I've heard described as the ball of foot

( The ball of the foot is the padded portion of the sole between the toes and the arch, underneath the heads of the metatarsal bones.[1)

They had to hold me down...lol I didn't think about it at the time but the bottom of the foot has to be one of the worst places to get injection besides the eyeball....

But it helped what ever was wrong in short time frame, co worker told me he received one in his shoulder because of arthritis, and it wasn't pleasant ( can be expected, as with any shot going deep) but helped and he's never had to get another .

he said his shoulders bug him every once in a while, but after the shot for years he did light exercises focused on his shoulders ( doc told him about) and never had any issue....but he doesn't do them any more and says that's probably why his shoulders bug him little from time to time.
