    ATC 110 joined the family

My son got a pretty nice Honda ATC 110 for dirt cheap, it runs but needs a little TLC. He has a friend who has a house in the high desert and there's room to roam, lots of sand. He's just doing it for a laugh.

I was looking at this guy's restoration of an ATC 90, he does nice work. This is a condensed version of the job. He did a nice job on a VFR 400 as well. He uses Deox-C rust remover and it sure looks like it works extremely well. There's a comparison with Evapo-Rust a guy did on YouTube and the Deox-C blows it away. It's a powder you add to water. Anyone use? I don't think it's used much in the US but it's available on eBay.

When did the ATV industry stop making 3-wheel machines and why? I knew a guy who would do weekend hair scrambles and he always had a story about someone's high side get off,

Keep us posted on the resto. Looks cool !

60 minutes sort of killed it with their expose on the number of injuries/deaths. And I think the USG banned it. Sometime in the 80s they stopped making them. This won't be a resto, just a sprucing up to have fun - son will do what's needed.

I think 86 or 87 was the last year. I had an 86 250r back in the late 90s. It was an awesome machine.

Owned 2. an used 80somthing Yamaha Tri-moto 200. No rear suspension was the worst. But it still was a lot of fun. Sold that at about age 15, bought a brand new 1986 Honda 200X. Is was a blast. Worst injuries: Dislocated left wrist, and torn right ACL (or at least the start of the tear). But we had so much fun on these. All my buddies had quads. We'd race on the frozen ponds in the winter. Carry kegs of, um Birch Beer, into the woods for weekend outings. Good Times.

Nice! I'm sure he'll be fine, he's careful. This one is interesting - it won't be dangerous 3 wheeler because it will always be on 2 wheels!

                Cool, and nice Scout!

Here is the $300 death machine. The seller said his friend is an upholsterer and did the seat. It is perfect, probably the best bike seat I've ever been on. It's too loud and doesn't idle but we'll take care of that.

They were going to make manus buy back. Fortunately large sacs of money went to politicians.

Son bought for a song and a laugh. Dirt bikes too much $ where we live, though he did find his pal an immaculate DR400Z for $2K. He rides a few times a winter in the desert and there is a lot of deep sand. This toy should be fun, till it isn't. His pal whose parents who own the desert house lets him ride a Yamaha BW200 when they go. He says it is fun on the sand,, but it isn't running now. So this is a cheap way to play around in the sandy expanses of the Mojave desert for minimal dough and he can sell it for a few hundred profit easily. He has a Ducati DesertX for the fire roads and is a serious MTB rider. Hate's a strong word, I save it for weak beer!

Yep, it's hitting the 40-year nostalgia sweet spot perhaps? Or they're dreaming. The things we wanted as 20-year-olds (if you are a 'mature' gentleman, ahem) and may pine for are mostly gone. I had several Fiat 124 Sport Coupes, and they are like hen's teeth now. But moving to the mid-80s I remember wanting a Mitsubishi Starion turbo - as a 944 was far out of reach and it hit the same notes, sorta. But alas so was the Starion TBH. When's the last one of those I saw? Probably the 80s. My son thinks my '81 Scirocco was cool but it was gutless. My '84 GTI had better power and suspension, but the interior buzzed to a different tune every couple hundred RPM. But I really wanted a Lancia Scorpion/Montecarlo (and still do, though I'm too big to fit in it and it's hopelessly flawed) Ahh, memories.

ATC pricing has definitely gotten crazy. I sold my 250r to my brother for $500 back in the day. I saw a restored one for sale last week for 8k....

                          Back in the day....

The ATC was running terribly, would start and run only on choke and it was really blackening the plug and making a stink, so off came the $20 Chinese carb. The idle jet was completely clogged, so I cleaned it out, and now it idles and runs really well, with no smoke. I think it was just varnish because the tank is clean inside, but I put some filters on that I had on hand. I did a compression check and got 140. That is at the service limit but higher than I expected. My old tester seems to read low so I think it's a healthy little thing, shifts and goes just fine. It only needs the brake cable lubed and some new shoes I suspect. Little Hondas and similar are so fun and easy to work on.
