When Halley's Comet appeared in the winter of '86 we set up the telescope in town and let people see it and they got a signed certificate saying they saw it in such and such a constellation etc etc. The County manager arrived with all his kids including a fourteen year old girl. The comet disappeared behind the Sun and we caught it again in late January. Back came the fourteen year old girl for another look.
Later her teacher was going on about the 76 year period of Halley and that is would be unusual to see it in different years
This girl said she had and the teacher was unwise enough to bet twenty quid.
Back comes our girl with two certs dater '86 and '87.........

Happened to me last week .... Northern Lights show at three in the morning .... Set up the camera on a tripod . Nature got me up at three . Tripped over the tripod on the way to the john and still managed to forget about it before I rolled back into the sack .....

Already have an alarm set on the phone. Remember a couple years ago there was a similar eclipse. The deep red color of the moon was surreal.

Still waiting patiently for 2024 total eclipse of the sun.

I will set an alarm for that. Back in the 80's we had a total solar eclipse. I was at the shop working and I stepped out onto the parking lot with my welding helmet on to watch the sun go away. During the darkest phase the freaking transformer on the pole exploded. It shot out oil and pieces of the glass insulators everywhere. That one was memorable.
