It's certainly true that the Chinese have a turbulent history, but they may be the first culture on the planet to actually learn a few lessons from their past. Their expansion into buying influence and access in Africa while it's cheap is a brilliant example of that super long-term thinking that will pay off for centuries.
They also seem somewhat more pragmatic. For example, I doubt the widespread famine of the Mao era's "Great Leap Forward" could happen again, or the extreme isolationism.
That said, there are also plenty of signs they're making the same important mistakes as every authoritarian government. Xi Jinping made himself President for life, they're trying to control culture through surveillance and brutal repression, and they have long had the same obsession with racial and national purity as every other authoritarian state. They've been slaughtering and brutalizing minority groups. Things are a little different in the internet era, which the leaders don't seem to "get"; they're having a much harder time controlling information and thus far the old approaches aren't working. And they're sliding daily into more and more isolationism while trying to have their trade cake and eat it too.
The same pattern has continued over and over all over the world, decade after decade...
“The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.
To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.
To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.”
― Douglas Adams, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Authoritarians always seem to completely lose track of reality once they get the trains running on time, and then start believing they can control everything people think if they can just kill and imprison enough people.Last edited by bwringer; 03-17-2022, 04:05 PM.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Roads through Belarus must be better or maybe he planned a route through Scandinavia.
Clearly thought he would be welcome.
I looked up AWACS and its seems the system can only range to 320 kms so not far enough to reach kyiv from romania. Its till may explain partly why there's no Russian presence in the western part of the country. That and a much sat intelligence the US deems it safe to give.

Got a drone? Think twice about those updates. This is an example of how your device can be turned against you in the modern world.
According to the latest reports from Ukraine, Chinese drone manufacturer DJI Global has limited the capabilities of its Aeroscope technology to the Ukrainian army, giving the Russian occupiers a significant advantage in aerial reconnaissance.
("Aeroscope" is a software that maps the drone controller so you can imagine the danger to Ukranian drone operators-they can be targeted)

I'm starting to think that the only solution to this is regime change ..... The west doesn't have the stomach to take him on militarily unless he violates Article 5 ..... And I doubt if a stray missile landing in Poland would qualify as a violation ..... And no one is naive enough to believe it ends with The Ukraine ...... So making life as miserable as we can for Joe Sixvodka and the Oligarchs may be the way through this .......Old age and treachery will beat youth and skill every time1983 GS 750

Not going to happen, IMO. The way out is the way in. Settle Donbas, Crimea and NATO. I get that you can't trust Pootin but he can't trust the USA... Pootin was very plain before he pushed the go-button. China might step up as intermediary because China can pressurise Russia without being the proxy for the USA and NATO.
Yes, the poisoner hasn't credibility but he will go sooner or later and sooner will allow scars to heal quickly if Russia can find the right person to put balm on the sore spots.
