    BMW K1100RS Spline Lube

Decided to do the transmission spline lube on the '95 K1100RS. Service is due every 40K miles.
She only has 36K miles, but better now when I have the time.

It's not a difficult job, but time consuming...I cannot imagine what BMW would charge

Had the day off yesterday, so I got started.
    Get ready...set...go...

Removed the seat, side panels and foot peg mounts - That's the O2 sensor cable dangling there (yes, it has a catalytic convertor)

Have to pull the belly pan to get the exhaust off

    Exhaust and rear wheel off

    More to come...

Want to do the one on my R1100RT for me?
    It's a "little" overdue.

On second thought, I'll just take my chances with the splines the way they are.

I'm actually planning on doing this in a month or so, very timely for you to post this.

          Thanks!

From what I've read, many people go way past 40K. If you have trouble shifting, that is an indication it needs lubing.
But I wanted to change the monkey nuts on the alternator and clean/seal the gear indicator sensor. So I figured, why not?

Mine is pushing 90,000 miles, it may have been done but I have no record of it. The clutch is still butter smooth so maybe it has.

From what I have read, once you have a problem with shifting or it jumps out of gear the damage is already done and spline replacement is the only cure or possibly a transmission overhaul. The guys here at Motoghost seem to think it has someting to do with the allignment of the shaft. But like you Baatfam I'm going to do mine at 40K also, would rather be sure rather than get stranded somewhere a long way from home.

Could be...don't know. I really only visit a couple of K-bike sites for the BMW. And believe me...the K-bikes think these things are indestructible.

Ran out to the store because I didn't think I had a 12mm allen socket...but when I got to Autozone and picked a set of three sockets, 12mm, 14mm and 17mm, I realized I had bought those before.
Went home, checked my tool box and there they were...doh

So...took a little work, but got the final drive and swing arm off.

                      Transmission is out...

Splines are pretty devoid of any lube....glad I am taking the time to do this.

Need to order a few small parts for reassembly time.

Pics a little later...right now I am going to relax and have a beer...or three.

Very ambitious project Bob. And to think you were impressed that I started my yearly winter projects this early by doing a chain and sprocket change last weekend. I feel so unproductive now........

                              Ha....

Well I am glad I did this now.
Discovered my rear brake pads were done and the rubber exhaust hanger was toast.
                              Ordering parts right now.

Besides, I've been sitting on my @ss watching TV since Christmas...
