1985 Yamaha FZ750 - rebuild

    Well here we go......

    So, I finally got the time, the will and the room.....

    Had to get my GS out of the garage, the Harley that is almost done, and a bit of organization, and I was able to get both of the FZ's into the garage.

    Before they came in I took the pressure washer to each bike, soaped them down, let that sit for a bit and hosed it off, took the leaf blower and blew off all the excess water, and into the garage they went...

    Sorry no pics of the bike getting a bath.....

    There really is not a lot I want to do, in way of tear down, took only a few things off for now, just to gain more room to work on the bike, but the first thing is to see if she is alive and will she run......I know she cranks over, but will she rumble....this is still a mystery.....

    I have my good buddy Spyug coming down in the morning, bring the extra battery, and the IV bottle (I can't find mine, bloody hell) and first order of business is to get the bike running, if not running, at least make sure there is enough to know that she will run.....

    I have fresh gas, getting some oil, as I don't even know if there is any in the bike, got the charger as well, and a whole lot of prayer....

    Well here are a few pictures, to get us going, and hopefully there will be many more....

























    There is hope for this bike, if she starts....

    There is a lot of work ahead, but it should be no worse than the GS750E I did, however I do see a bit more rust on this one, and a few parts that are missing and will be a pain to find and or get....

    I will try to do this one just as good if not better than the GS

    If cash is not an issue, this one will get powder coated frame, bits and pieces that are attached to the frame as well, all new stainless steel nuts and bolts where I can, painted engine ( of course ) new tires, battery, ss brake lines, grips, and a rebuild of the carbs, a fresh new paint job, probably in the way it was ( this is still up in the air ) new decals to go and some new body work, as some of it is broken....

        Well off to the garage, Spyug will be here any minute, and it's time to make this old girl sing.....

        I forgot to mention, if anyone has ideas of any kind by all means throw them out, especially if you have any resources for cheap parts, extra parts, or just over all input of any kind.....

          I am anxious to see this build for a couple of reasons, it happens to be one of my favorite VJM's of all time and I want to see your quality work applied. This should be top notch. No pressure....

            I can go all out, if anyone is willing to throw money my way...

            Spyug and I did a quick rundown of the costs, and to do it high end it will be roughly around $2200.00, and if I go on the cheap it will be roughly half of the about 11 hundred....

            Either way I will do my utmost best......it should be close to and or the same as the GS....

              She runs...

              Well today was a great day......

              Spyug came over to help out, and brought over his IV bottle, his battery, some jumper cables, and his vast years of knowledge.....

              I supplied the beer, pizza, some years of knowledge, and a couple of dead FZ's.....

              After a few hours of this and that, removing the plugs, spraying gas down the carbs, using quick start, some swearing and cursing......

              the one bike roared to life....it was a joyous occasion, which was promptly celebrated with a few beers, some Slivovica, and a few Cuban cigars....

              One bike is up and running, and not bad for sitting for almost a year, spent the winter outside under a tarp, she started up and ran just fine...

              The second bike we could not get started, and you will see in the last picture more or less why, we almost had her going, and we did hear a slight rumble, but no long term running.....

              Well time to tear down the first bike, and start the rebuild, now it's worth it as I do know I have a running bike....

              Let the games begin....

              This is what happens, when a bike sits outside for a year, this filter is on the 2nd bike, no wonder we were not able to get it started....even though we removed it bike still would not start.....

                Tear down

                So the tear down started tonight....well that was after I planted the weeping Mullberry tree in the front yard for the wife....

                so on to more serious business...

                this holds the headlight, gauges, choke cable, turn signals

                water fill tank and thermostat, cool working on a bike that is water cooled




                carbs are out....boots look good, but the carbs will get a full rebuild...

                  And the tear down continues

                  So tonight I went back to the garage, and continued with the tear down. A little bit here and little bit there, and eventually it will all be apart.

                  I am actually finding this bike to be a bit less complicated so far in the tear down process, not sure if it's an easier bike to work on as opposed to the GS, or is it because it's the second bike I have done in such a short time, that it just seems to be less complicated.....

                    I'm still tracking this thread...once I get going...I'll post pics of my "T" teardown. But for the time being, I will enjoy your disassembly.

                          This one will be all stock....was not planning on doing any modifications, other than SS brake lines and the clutch line, I am not even sure if I will do the SS nuts and bolts but I might...

                          Limited funds for this project sort of, so unless I can find cheap stuff like exhaust, most items will stay stock...

                          It needs a battery, new tires, and some new plastics, plus a complete paint job.....

                          do you perhaps have a recommendation on an exhaust ?.....

                            tear down 3

                            Well continuing with the tear down, and it's coming along very nicely...

                            got all the coolant lines off, got the oil rail off, the starter motor is out, as well I manged to remove the clipons along with the levers and cables still attached to them, those items I will work on latter to get off.

                            I wanted to remove the alternator as well tonight, and after removing the 2 bolts that I thought were holding it in place, it wouldn't budge, checked the manual and it seems that is all that is holding it in place, but it's being stubborn, so I left it for tonight and will get back to it at my next go around...might have to study the manual a bit more to make sure I didn't miss anything, could be it's just held on by being on for the last 25 plus years....

                            interesting way of delivering oil to the top of the head, as opposed to te GS where it's flexible lines, the Yamaha uses a rigid tube







                            nice intake port, strange how it's oval shaped and not round...



                            O rings seem to be OK, will pull them out latter to see if they are squished, I really don't want to be getting new ones but I will if need be




                            the starting motor, does not spin freely, has some sort of resistance, not sure if that is normal, going to have to open it up and see....

                              Not sure of anything that you can buy new but I have seen Kerkers from time to time on Ebay.

                                Yup.....your right on the KerKers.....have seen those as well, and or have a custom pipe done, or find something that was used on a previous bike, I wouldn't mind a 4-1...

                                Since the existing pipes are not in bad shape, they will have to do for now, maybe down the road I can look at just a slip on to be fabricated onto the existing piping and just get rid of the current cans.


                                Well if nothing else, all new SS braided lines have been ordered, from our good friend Raymond over at -





                                hey, that is my first purchase for this bike....LOL

                                and I am still in tear down mode....
