            Cleaning

            And so the cleaning continues....

Just getting the crud off a bit, all the parts will be completely stripped down and cleaned properly, but it gives me something to do and it makes it easier to see the parts and what condition they are in...

for example the front forks require new seals one of them is hacked up a bit

            and so a few pictures....

              Front_forks

Tonight was an easy night, it's too hot and humid to be working, but with a beer by my side, and a bit of determination, I thought it would be good to disassemble the front forks, get them cleaned up, get rid of the old oil that is in them, and put it all back together.

well the first problem was they are off the bike, and the top caps are on good and tight, since I don't have 3 hands, or a vise, I had to call on the neighbor to help me out. I held on tightly of the tub, he used the socket and we managed to loosen off the caps, once loose I knew I could get them off, and off they came.

Took all the inards out, drained the oil, poured a bit of varsol down the tube shook it around and drained that as well. Next will be the rest of the shock to come apart, as I do have to take the seals off one is ripped, but before I dismantle them all the way I have to check to see if this needs to be done, no sense in doing more work than is required, but then again I can paint the lower parts and not have to mask off anything,,,,well I will see....

So a few pictures of tonight's work, and I even included the first part that has been cleaned and painted, you will see it right at the end...

I am trying, that is for sure, I always, well most of the time, told myself, if your going to do something do it right, or just don't do it at all....

I don't like things to be done half Azz'd

                  ya know...lol

                    Frame

It's been raining most of today, but caught a bit of a break, and since everything was wet outside anyways, I decided to give the frame a spray of Simple Green, a wire brush in some areas, and just a baby bottle brush for some of the tighter areas, then it got a good blast with the power washer, and left out in the sun for a bit to dry off....

Neighbor across the street came over for a bit to see the progress, and mentioned he has a portable sand blaster, just needs to be hooked up to an air compressor, and sand......well I actually do have access to an industrial air compressor, and sand at the local Princess Auto, so maybe by next week I will sand blast the frame, the rims, and the exhaust,,,,ohhh ya, that will save me a lot of time of standing in front of the wire wheel, you gotta love good neighbors.....

And a few pics of the now squeaky clean frame.....

Just after putting the frame back in the garage, I took off all the nuts and bolts cleaned them on the wire wheel, took off the center stand, but I have decided to use all new SS Allen head bolts and nuts and so on, at least I now they are not going to rust, and all will be nice and new, now I just have to go and figure out what I need....

                    Cheers

                      Cleaning_2

not a lot of progress tonight, just a bit of cleaning, wiping down, and a bit of primer, slowly but surely as they say....

                            Do I need to ?

or is it you think it should be done as an upgrade ?

I have not given it any thought as of yet..

Springs are a great bang for your buck and you already have them apart. Remember those stock springs have had the pressure of the weight of the bike minimum on them for 28 years. New springs spaced properly will be something you wont regret.

Thanks, I will keep it in mind for sure, I will see how the old ones are and if in spec or not....

I need to put the bike together and running, then I can look at upgrades, once I am confident she runs well.....then upgrades will be worth doing....

I know the engine runs and idles, but I don't know about the tranny, charging system and cooling system....I do know the rad fan works....LOL,,,so that is one thing I don't have to worry about,,,,,,hehehehe
