Kz 650b1..austin moto fest auction bike

    Getting to work on the switches and the switch box housing. 2 hours in vinegar got them all to at least move. Upon opening the right side switch housing, I discovered the little orings that hold the wires to the kill switch had been broken and taped up..the little screws are gone too.

    I now have to get some real small ringlets and wire to solder the wires a bit longer to accomodate putting the kill switch back into service.

    Lots of work here to be done!!!!

      Chuck, I have been following along your build. Just sold a 77' kz650 to my brother in law a couple weeks ago, hell of a bike! What exactly is the Moto Fest Auction? Is this a charity event or for profit? Are you doing full restore on it? Looks like you have your work ahead of you, good job so far!

        Its an event started by Frank Z. and Whereiwannabe here on the forum..its in Austin in April.

        We are doing a frame off restoration ( best as we can get it factory original ) to be auctioned of for the Kick Starters program. You can google Austin Moto Fest to bring up the website.

        I have been doing something bike related for an event back in MI for lots of years. True to form, if its to be benificial to kids and bring them some joy, then I am all in. Thats why I donated my 78 750e for The Harvest Classic last year. Ive never had a family of my own..and not much of a "give a crap" family growing up.. so I get involved for kids sake if I can help out.

          Frank got the bike for 300.00 and myself, Frank, Jap Bike Randy and whoever elses arms we can twist are putting her back together. I envision one heck of a sweet ride when we are done!!!!

            A very worthy cause. I've got a tote of misc. 77 & 78 kz650 stuff, if you need something let me know and I'll see if I got it. I'll be following along.

                I am gonna have to find a few real small switch control springs..the one for the kill switch detent was rusted to powder..literally. Let the hunting begin.

                  Disassembled the switches today and MAN these parts are rusty!!

                  The starter button switch frame was bent. Now the tedious job of going thru every contact and spring begins.

                  1ST and last pics are the horn button assembly. Other 2 are the starter button assembly.

                      Dang close Frank!!! That "PO" must stand for the "Parking Only" light setting. Thats the swtich that turns the headlight on and off, so I figured that must be what PO means??

                      Have no fear.. i will get each part spotless and back in working order soon.

                        Just getting back online after all the months of planning for Austin Moto Fest. I got a nice greeting from our admin himself after signing in this morning welcoming me back .

                        What a thrill to see this thread! When the KZ650 showed up I knew it was going to take a community to see it back to prime fighting shape. Thank you so much Chuck for stepping up.

                        We plan to auction it off at Austin Moto Fest 2014 with proceeds going to the continued funding of Push Starters, the non-profit we created as part of AMF. You can find info on Push Starters here: http://pushstarters.org.

                        In fact, by the end of today our very first applicant will have completed her MSF course, compliments of one of our sponsors. We still have a lot of work to do organizationally, but I think we're off to a great start.

                          Mike...I am all about doing something to help kids. You couldnt keep me from stepping up to "do my thing" short of locking me in a jail cell!!!

                          I will be proud to see her sitting there looking so sweet knowing I had a hand in her resurrection.

                            Got the switch boxes rehabed. Now its on to cleaning the actual switches that go in them. I even got a very fine little scratch in one already..but it is gonna be what it is now!!

                                In Europe, many of the countries require a 3rd low-wattage filiment in the headlight. It's that setting that PO turns on. It's basically a low wattage light used for running in well lit town areas.
