    Two 1971 Yamaha Enduros

    It's getting late, so I don't have a lot of time to write backstory. But the gist of it is: my father-in-law (Frank) has had these two Yammies sitting in his barn for the past 22 years or so. Last ridden in the early 80's to my knowledge. It was actually my wife's idea to ask him if I could drag them out and get them going again. All of my motorcycle knowledge up to this point is Suzuki GS, so these older little 2-strokes are a completely different kettle of fish for me. Anyhow, we dragged them out in the evening, and this was the first direct sunlight they have seen in a very long time.

    I've determined that this is probably a 1971 HT1-B. 125cc, as you can see. This was Frank's main ride back in the day. 5000+ miles, beat to heck. This one is in pretty bad shape, not sure if it's going to be worth the effort. The piston is seized, the tank is full of rust, the seat is torn, the tires are shot, many metal parts bent or dented, the tach is missing, the throttle is seized, one of the turn signal lenses is missing, obviously will need a new chain and probably sprockets. But other than that, it's perfect, right? The one upside is that the chrome fork uppers aren't too bad, probably because the fork seals were leaking. This one might be beyond recovery. It's definitely not going to be the first one to tackle. We will see what becomes of it.

    I'm not finding much in the way of a one-stop-shop for information on these bikes like we have with this forum and BassCliff's site. Can't even find a PDF version of the manual online, so it looks like I'm headed to eBay for a dead tree edition.

    There really is not much to them at all. They are piston-port 2-strokes. Clean cylinders and piston rings within spec, clean carb with some new rubber bits and spark. That rack is most probably exceedingly rare and might be very valuable.

      Bike number two appears to be a 1971 AT1-C. 90cc this time. Frank bought it so his wife could ride too (my mother-in-law) but, well, let's just say motorcycling wasn't for her. Something about being afraid to lean into a turn and henceforth running into a stop sign. Anywho...

      This one is in far better shape. Also covered in 22+ years of barn dust, but only 1515 miles. Engine is free, gas tank appears to be spotless, seat looks very good. This should clean up pretty well. The only major problem that I can find is that the left fork tube upper is severely pitted. (The right one was saved, once again, by a leaking fork seal.) This is the one I'm going to start with. I brought the gas tank, the oil tank, the air cleaner, and the carb home with me to rebuild and clean up. Plan of attack will look something like this:

      * Clean up/rebuild tanks, air cleaner, carburetor
      * Find service manual on eBay
      * Power-wash the biatch
      * Rebuild forks
      * Lube brake/throttle/clutch cables
      * Have a look at the brakes
      * New chain
      * New left fork tube (or research how to repair?)
      * Get the electrical straighted out
      * See what a good rear brake light costs on eBay
      * Might paint/clearcoat a few things
      * Baffle missing on exhaust?

      (We have that missing cover, by the way, it's just not installed.)

      I don't have any pressing questions at the moment, but if anyone is familiar with these bikes, feel free to reach out.

          Nice projects, great little bikes.
          There is a big and strong resurgence in small bore two strokes for some or other reason.
          I just got a little Suzuki AC50, circa 1970
          Will be following along with interest.

              Guess it would be worth a look but price is up there. Matters how much you want to pay though.

                I've been looking for years for a '73 Yamaha 175. My uncle had one new and I took my MC endorsement on it in 1974. Like this. Love this color.
