        Mine have been 100% reliable, and maintenance is 100% easy. It has a smaller oil capacity because it's a race bike, so you change the oil more often, but hey it's a dirt bike. An oil change is a ten minute affair, if you spend nine minutes watching the oil drain. Nothing else except tires have needed anything at all so far in my four bikes.



        As opposite to BMW as can be. I used to be a fan, but I'm done with them, except for maybe the old road bikes.

          Hey Kent I respect you opinion as you have way more experience with bikes than I do. All I can do is go by my own experience...and 32,000kms in 17 months later my BMW ha been nothing short of brilliant!

                  $1600 ???
                  That's about what I paid a few days ago for my latest purchase, a 1986 K100. Seller had all maintenance done, oil just changed, tires almost new and the only thing I have to do is register it for about $30, have the inspection done for $28 and insure it for $68 and I'll be all set for a year and ride it when I'm not using the vStrom. Oh, I'll have to add some nitrogen charge to the $600 Works performance rear shock. Then I'll sell it for what I paid for it next year and the next buyer will be getting a deal.

                      I have more but I don't want to feed your bike porn pic addiction....maybe if you're out east someday I'll let you ride it. The nice thing about this bike is that the bars were swapped out with higher, wider bars from the low narrow stock bars to give a better neutral sitting position and still have the fairing work good and not lose the feel of the corners.

                        Count me with the guys that think paying that much for the listed work is absurd. Flushing brake fluid, changing oil, various visual inspections, etc, are all things that are easily doable. The sooner you learn about your bikes mechanicals the better, exception being if you don't plan on keeping the bike around for long. If you love your bike and plan on keeping it then the involvement of doing the work will provide satisfaction all it's own too. Another aspect of motorcycling that can be enjoyable for many.

                          I agree but I don't know how that would effect my warranty. BMW doesn't likely want a "shade tree mechanic" carrying out their maintenance programs. I don't know though. When I bought the bike I knew the costs of maintenance. I have budgeted for it. With 6 years unlimited mileage warranty, I don't really wanna mess with that.
                          I figure I ride the BMW 20,000 ((13,000miles) a year. Every 10,000kms I have to take it in for an oil change etc. at a cost of $300. So that's $600 a year to maintain a $23,000, 173hp awesome (IMO) motorcycle. I'm just fine with that, thank you very much.

                          And besides...I can guarantee you I spend more on my old GS's putting the same miles on them. And there is certainly no warranty on them.

                              Well one small consolation with the service was that I got to ride this for the whole day. A great bike with 160hp and weighs under 400lbs I believe. This thinks is a blast to ride and pull my arms out of their sockets!
                              Very impressive but still wouldn't trade my bike for it.

                                Not sure about your laws, but here they can't wiggle out of the warranty like that unless they can prove your poor maintenance actually caused a failure. You do stuff right and it's not a problem, or if you do something wrong but that part doesn't fail it's not a problem.

                                I bet your laws are similar, but BMW might not advertise the fact.
