    My new DR600

Well after a short hunt for a bigger enduro I picked up this beauty yesterday. A 1986 Suzuki DR600RG, in very good shape for the year and only 28'000KM on the clock. Should get me a bit further than the old TS250.

It does have a dent in the tank and some wear and tear but over all it's in great shape for a 29 year old enduro. Heck the skid plate still have all the blue paint on it

Spent the day going over her, gaped the valves and man was that easier than doing the old 8V with shims. Adjusted both the automatic and manual decompression valves and 'I think' I fixed an issue with the manual decompression valve. Cleaned up the chain and adjusted it, and gave her a good cleaning. More routine maintenance to do for sure but a good start today.

Hey Rob, that's a beauty, I saw one a little while ago on the local CL here.

Had about 500KM on it and just mint, $3,000 asking IIRC, almost went for it but I am holding out for a newer DR650.

I've found a few nice ones and just missed one a few weeks ago, as I thought about it for a day and it was gone when I called back.

They are really inexpensive in Canada now with the exchange rate, so I suspect many will be heading south as anything here for $4,000 - $4,500 is only about $3,000 - $3,250 US.

          Enjoy.

You know you can buy a new DR650 for $6000, pretty sure that was the price tag at Mile Zero. One came up on UsedVictoria for $3500 the other day, 17'000km, have a look it might still be there. $3000 for an old DR600 is crazy I think. I paid less than half that for mine. Super happy with the bike so far, not that it's been long but I'm find that parts are hard to get on this continent, at least online. I'm able to buy from my local dealer but $$$ wow, as usual. There's more stuff available in Europe.

Yes, $6,800 out the door for a 2016 model. I will probably buy a 2-3 year old one that's got very low milage and has had some of the sensible mods already done, larger tank, Bark Busters, good Bash Plate etc. and hopefully get it for around $5,000 all in with taxes.

I wonder if Modern Motorcycles in Vancouver has any parts for the DR600, have you tried them before?

That's a good suggestion, I've never used them before but I've heard he's got a quite a few old OEM parts and such, thanks.

Rob, I finally bought one, it's a 2013 DR650, found on CL in Duncan and I will be coming over on Wed to pick it up.

Only 2,500 KM on the bike and it has a few of the good mods already done, Bark Buster hand guards, bash plate, quality rear rack, seat concepts seat, lower pegs and a bunch of spare parts for servicing the bike plus a manual.

Stock carb and air box so nothing hacked up there which is what I wanted as well.

Does not have a larger tank but I will do research to see what I will need, either 20 or 24 liter not sure yet.

I'm always amazed that someone will buy a new bike from a dealer, pay another $2,000 or more on extras and put on less than a few thousand KM's and then sell it, why not ride it stock and then find out if you like it or not.

There sure are some good deals to be had right now.

BTW did you check with Modern to see if they had anything for your bike? If you need help let me know.

I know the guys there very well as I buy most of my riding gear from them and my Vstrom came from there.

                    Cheers,

                    David

A brand new DR or an early 90s DR, they are the same bike.
A few years old is the way to go, or more if you can find one that's been cared for.
                      Nice bikes either way.

Thanks Charlie, super happy with it so far. Sounds like you founds a pretty nice bike David and thanks for the reminder about Modern, maybe I'll give them a call this week but really there's nothing on the bike that is missing or broken. But I would like to get a spare set of side covers etc...

So far I've done some routine maintenance. Valve clearances adjusted, took me a few tries to get them right , new plugs, oil/filter change, cleaned and re-oiled the air filter. Stripped and dipped the carb and fresh o-rings, new o-ring for the intake boot. Pulled the exhaust system, sandblasted it and hit it with high heat paint. Had to have the local machine shop do some repair to the kick start lever but she's better than new now, and I had them do a repair to a weld on the head light shield. She's running perfectly now as far as I can tell, I'm new to these old Thumpers of course. Next on the list is a new back tire and this winter I'm going to POR-15 the tank.

Not long after I bought the DR I posted up a few local adds looking for parts. I've gotten some really good parts; carbs, seat, tank, fender and a few other bits and pieces but this stash is by far the best so far. It was too funny, the young fella was going to chop the poor ol' thing, make it into something horrible I'm sure so he started taking of parts and then lost interest (thankfully). So at first he said "nope, no airbox, no covers, no this, no that...." When I picked it up today we had to look in his shed for something and immediately I found everything he had taken off the bike with the exception of a few bolts (probably would have found that if I'd looked for 5 more minutes). Odometer shows only 16'000 kms so who knows what I've got. Think I'll renew that ad when it comes time
