NEVER SNEAK UP ON A SLEEPING DOG..NOT EVEN YOUR OWN.
I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

I would think that like most rare bikes the HUGE dollars come with a bike in stock condition.
Having not seen a pic, how far from stock is it?
Do any of the 900 parts crossover? Is it still considered legit if they do crossover?
If it is in the $25,000 range you are not going to want to ride it.2@ \'78 GS1000
