Just for laughs here's an old slide I just scanned of mine back 1978 shortly after I bought. I think yours is actually cleaner as it was just ridden quite a distance in the rain the day before. At a buddies house in Kelowna , BC. Lived in Vancouver at the time and was my only transportation thus the air horns.

I know Chuck says he's not a flipper, I'll accept that at face value. I did however think he was in the motorcycle repair business or was buying a shop or something. Looks like he working inside a shop anyway. The legit MC repair shops around here get $90 an hour (and thats even if they will work on your old bike, sometimes they won't) and dealerships service center a bit higher.
I know one home shop guy who gets $50 and hour+ parts, does a reasonable good job and knows his way around the old cycles. He is ALWAYS busy, never advertises and it takes as long as it takes to get the job done. Often times your cycle might sit around for a while, even weeks, until he gets to it, he keeps good focus on one job at a time. Takes cash, works when he wants to and it makes a pretty nice side business for him.
All this to say from what I know about Chuck I think his value has to be similiar, about a $50/hr guy, due to his extensive knowledge fixing on many types of old cycles. I remember he did a charity deal with Frank fixing up and old KZ650, which I donated and shipped him a few parts for and the bike came out pretty nice as I remember. The head scratcher to me here is people don't value their own skill or time very well. Chuck had over 40 hours of TIME in this Yammy project the last I paid attention, thats not even parts. I know, I know its not all about money but if you do math and I do, that's $2000 labor in a bike that when all said and done is maybe valued at $1300-$1500 on a great day. Maybe? I don't know. maybe Chuck is very well off and doesn't need money or he's chalking it up to "work therapy" which I have seen many guys do over the years. If your keeping the bike man how many do you need? This ones not likely to gain much value if its some type of investment.
Chuck, it seems like if your going to do something this extensive you would start with a better candidate that's all. Do what you want but think of this way, would you advise someone who brought you this non-runner to be fixed to invest $1000-$2000 bucks in it?

As mentioned Chuck and Tornado have a history. Personal grudges aired in public are never nice especially seeing how it is pretty one sided at the time. Chuck can more than stick up for himself when he feels the need. Most times it just isn't worth the effort when a particular individual doesn't seem to be able to let go of it. And be honest here, how many of us aren't upside down on most of our GS projects. Maybe a few make some money but I'd say very few. As for banning ...I don't believe in it. The only "history" I've witnessed between chuck and Tornado is Tornado bashing chuck again and again. He's a belittling bully that shouldn't be allowed to carry on here without a swift kick in the aZZ and taught to correct his behavior or get out.Ed

In my view, the fact Chuck seems able to rise above it makes him go up in my estimation. The fact that Tornado seems to have some sort of a chip on his shoulder, and has to resort to attempted mockery just makes him look a fool and wastes bandwidth.
Other than that, you all should do what you want with your old bikes. I like to see stuff come back from the dead, learn new skills, de-stress, get out from under the wife's feet etc. Others only see profit. No problem either way.1980 GS550ET

The only person with a problem with John Smith is John Smith. If anyone has skills and the gumption to take what would t parts or a full bike that would otherwise be considered "too far gone" seems to rub him the wrong way. Another build thread from Chuck that goes off the tracks..again..by a guy we're all tired of hearing from. I just want to see updates w/o all the drama. I enjoy seeing Chuck's progress reports but certainly would understand why he might be hesitant to post anything.1979 GS1000S,

Over the past 5 years I've been dabbling with retro/classic cars I've had no more than 3 at any time but have in total 5 passed through my hands. 1 was bought as a parts car to fix another, 1 ended up as a parts car when I worked out it was too far gone to save. Parts were used in the keeper cars or sold to fund the projects.
In total since 2013 I have spent £14,723.33 (according to Google that's $19,378.02 in United States Dollars). I have put in many hours, and that's been my hobby. I have been able to use, enjoy and show the cars. Even winning a trophy along the way. That's my reward.
All have been sold now while I take a break, and I got back all of my investment plus £849.57 profit, that works out £169.91 ($223.63 USD) a year and doesn't take into account any payment for my time. So I won't be making a living from it but that's not why I did it. Most people buy, use and sell cars at a loss. That fact I've used these cars for my personal enjoyment basically for free sits fine with me.sigpic Too old, too many bikes, too many cars, too many things
