      I can shove fuel through the GS850 at 20mpg *UK* gallons, just by horsing it up and down the backroads a lot. That went on to reserve at 80 miles, which brought it to my attention. That was with the original carbs, properly set up.
      I can do even worse than that now, of course.

        1982 GS1100 G converted by Motorcyclist magazine in 1986 to be a tribute to the Wes Cooley replica. 1982 Honda 900F. 1997 Yamaha VMax.
        Also owned: 1973 Kawasaki Z1 900, 1972 Honda 750 K, 1976 Yamaha XS 650, 1980 Kawasaki KZ 1000 MKII, 1978 Kawasaki SR 650. Current cage is a 2001 Mustang Bullitt in Dark Highland Green. Bought new in Sept. 2001.

          Disclaimer: Since I started driving until recently, the 'company' has always paid for all of my gas. So I've told every mechanic who has worked on my cars or bikes to tune for speed, not mileage.

          That being said, I would be concerned that 18 mpg might be indicative of a problem somewhere.

            If you have a properly jetted VMax with a decent exhaust and filter, it should get about 35 mpg on average, much less if you are constantly wacking the throttle open.
