Even though I love riding around on the GS, every time I get on the XS, which is far rougher, vibratory and an awkward pig sometimes, I get off it grinning like a loon. In comparison to the GS, it feels like a 250, but goes much much better than I remember the stock XS650 being.
I've also got the alloy shavings in the oil problem, and I suspect the front camchain guide needs replaced, so I'm limiting the miles I do until I get all the bits to do an engine pull and top end strip.
When I've got it apart I'll measure up the bores, as I have a suspicion that one of the POs might have had it over-bored a touch.
