Got a full 8 hours in the shop today. I was able to final block sand all 9 parts with 400, and get the GS fairing painted and clear coated..

This is the factory fairing that came with my S when I bought it..ouch..that's why I replaced it with an Airtech fiberglass one..but it didn't have the trailing edge bead. I have since learned how to fix these and will do so eventually.

I'll break out the detail gun for this.
Painted the black first to get the black stripes layed out first followed by the white stripe.

Ready to spray the white..pulling the tape will reveal the black stripe.

    On to the blue..

All three base coats are on successfully..

Three coats of clear..and done for the day. Let it dry tonight and go get it tomorrow.

Just need to cut and buff this fairing, paint the back satin black and on to the red for the Moto Guzzi next weekend.

I dunno, I found the feathered edge of black over white the most compelling. Solid blue? meh…
3 coats of clear, then wet sand and buff. I get that.

Sorry if I'm boring you, Bill.. It was actually white over black, too.. I don't have to do this. I do, to share the process and to maybe show some tips on techniques that I've spent years learning. I don't have to spend a ton of time taking pictures, uploading and posting them in sequential order either. I do this for my friend and client, Jim. It's a way for him to stay updated, also. If you've learned it all for yourself, good on you.

Fantastic Larry! That turned out real nice indeed!

I suspect Bill's post may be somewhat tongue in cheek

Looking forward to the Guzzi paint...

I guess that's one of the down sides of the internet..not knowing for sure if people are kidding or not. You' 've been on this thread from the beginning with interest , so I was surprised by what I had read as.."is that all you got..?" My apologies for the misunderstanding.

It's definitely hard to convey sarcasm and tongue in cheek comments without the facial expressions and body language... I've seen many a word war start from a textual misunderstanding, and things that aren't meant to be confronting or offensive can become so rather rapidly!

One of my co-workers had told me that the color with the smallest area should be laid down first, then the next smallest area, and so on. That looks to be how you've done it. My instincts tell me it should be the lightest color first, darkest last.

It looks like you've had no problem with the black showing through the white. How do you decide what order you use?

To me the first step is to establish the stripes. Everything works from there. Laying the black on gives you the opportunity to do that and it saves you having to lay down 3 lines of tape side by side then pulling out the center piece to spray the black or white 1/4" stripes. Painting the black first gives you the chance to do that. The white covers the black easily as does the blue. Solid colors cover well.

Back in the shop for another full day today. Started by getting the parts set up for red. I mask off all the "pedestals" that parts sit on so no dust from them can be blown into the paint. Takes time, but it saves in the long run.

Amazing how bad the color looks in these pics..it's not at all rust colored like that..it's a brilliant Porsche Guards Red. A beauty of a color.

After letting the red dry for 2 hrs. I got set up to do the black stripes in the tank, fairing and side covers. Start with the easy ones first..The vents are under a stripe of black.

The top and bottom of the tank are black, too.

On to the fairing. Getting one side done is not so hard..matching the other side the same takes about twice as long..

Sprayed the black stripes on the fairing, stripped the masking, and sprayed a few coats of clear to preserve everything.

The inside of the fairing will get satin black. Decals are next after sanding the clear a bit and a second round of clear to follow. Thanks for looking.

Great looking results again. Especially the fairing with the black accents. And the black on those side covers really pops.
