This is a customer bike from probably '87-'88. Most of them sold here were white. This bike still exists. One owner, good history, he's got it tucked away.

Have you had the fairings off yet ? The last three I've had here, the engines exteriors were disgusting. Under the fairings, they don't get cleaned.
The one here at present, I've had to have vapour blasted. It looked like it had been at the bottom of the sea for at least a year...
If anyone's interested I can pull the cases out and take a pic later - but I don't want to give you "case envy" LOL.
Good looking bike, that's an F2, or it has the F2 wheels.
BTW, will the F2 wheels fit the F1 Hurricane?

It's an F1 - but he finished up with extra wheels, as you do with race bikes...they may not even be F2 wheels. So long ago mow I can't remember - if I was ever told anyway. There were a lot of grey import Japanese home market 250's and 400's coming in around that time. They could be off anything. The criteria would be if they were wider than OE. Which were decidedly skinny.

I considered buying one of those bikes brand new back in the day. Can't remember if it was an F1 or F2 though. Anyway, what I do remember is that the bike cost something like $4 or $4.5k and insurance was $2k. Apparently they figured the bike was going to get totaled within 2 years. I passed.

Comprehensive insurance was (is) so expensive because if it tips off the side stand in the drive way, it could cost thousands of dollars in damage.

Then there's that whole young, unmarried male on a massively powerful sport bike thing.

I think those are the two main reasons.
1982 GS1100E V&H "SS" exhaust, APE pods, 1150 oil cooler, 140 speedo, 99.3 rear wheel HP, black engine, '83 red

2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.

The red and black was a gorgeous color scheme. I loved the grey and red scheme too.

"Massively powerful"???? Well that's a hoot, looking back from what 600cc power is rated today!
The 600cc market is entry level teen squids, so yeah the squid and his girlfriend got a 50/50 chance of annihilating themselves the first month of summer.

                Some of the work detail

Now just doing examinations and planning.
Looks like it only needs about $500 of parts, and that includes: AMG battery, fork spring upgrade, chain & sprockets, rear tire, tank decals, gasket, and muffler.
I have PPG black, Chrysler Prowler red and clear coat on hand.
Original red wheels are under the spray bomb, comes off with solvent.

Bought this OEM right side mirror, will have to wait for a left side to show up.

Remarkably good under the fairings. Never ridden in the rain ? The Kerker slipon is a bonus too.

                      A little mo naked.
Cleaned the wheels 95%, sanded and sprayed the brake and shift levers, kickstand, all were very rusty.

Working my way closer to the engine

Nice 4-1 header design, fits tight to the oil pan, lightweight but not too thin.

                          Valve adjustment chore…done!

Got into the valve adjustment chore, very good results!
Compression was so-so before adjustments. All the intake valves were too tight, and some exhaust valves. All set correctly now.
Compression across cylinders is; 1 to 4, 180-200-180-200 psi !!!
Got my bucket of soapy water and wiping away all the dust and dirt accumulation too.

The headers look black on the bike, but in this photo they look like chrome that has seen better days. Any plans on cleaning/refurbing?

Not sure what metal plating they had originally but it's definitely not chrome. Soft whitish silver, has to be zinc. But they were all black from the factory. The muffler pipe is aftermarket (Kerker-Supertrapp?)
