      It was a 900F, actually.

When (if) I get the skunk renovated, I'll have a pair of the first gen superbikes too.

The first gen Superbike series (1979 through 1982) featured the KZ1000, CB900F, and GS1000E. The second generation Superbikes (after they downsized max cc's from 1,049 to 750cc) were the GS750/700ES, the GPZ750, and the V45 Interceptor. It was that way from 1983-1985.

Then the GSXR750 came out, and everything changed.

So what would you call the early Kaw 900s? Or CB750s? Precursors?

I'm referring to motorcycles which were used in the AMA Superbike class of racing. The class started in 1973 and was dominated by European brands (BMW, Norton, Triumph) through 1976. One of the European teams jumped ship to Kawasaki the next year and in 1977 Big K won the class. The next year was when the madness started with quasi-factory supported teams by Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki going at it in no-holds-barred racing, using the above mentioned bikes in the years noted.

So the KZ1000, CB900, and GS1000 were the first generation of Japanese bikes used in Superbike racing.
