    Weird symptom

Guy i work with was telling me he has a 2006 Yamaha Vstar 650 classic with weird problem.

Starts great stone cold and will stay running and riding. Problem is that warm weather and it doesnt want to start. Said it will start great in the morning and he can ride to work. Leave it in the lot in the sun and it gets warm from the days heat and it wont start...or if it does its very very hard to get going.

Next morning when its cool out...fires right up. Im at a loss as to tell him check X or X and all I can think is valves out of adjustment or some kind of breaking in one of the electrical connectors somewhere.Anyone got anything like this in thier " been there and done that "files???

Normally, I would have to agree with HJ but, after looking at the parts fiche, those are emission carbs in a big way and have all kinds of fun (not) sensors and check valves.
These are NOT the ones with California emissions: http://www.partsoutlaw.com/oemparts/...94e/carburetor
These are the CA models: http://www.partsoutlaw.com/oemparts/...924/carburetor
      A few parts that caught my attention were: 16, 17, 31, 40, 49, 50

Start with any fuel venting that you may or may not find in the fuel cap and work your way to "Oh sh*t"
As to that fuel cap venting SYSTEM: http://www.partsoutlaw.com/oemparts/...395f/fuel-tank

some simple checks like making sure the enrichener is fully closing - cable bind? condition of spark plugs -color of the spark? oil smell like gasoline? Vstar 650 are sensitive to oil contamination. that bike has a fuel pump and relay too . and the famous float needle leaking gas into the cylinder.

so all I can say is a cold engine loves too much fuel and a hot engine does not. no fuel pump no go how are the hoses hooked up on emission canister?

there are a lot of them around this area.

I've had that problem with lousy grounds, and a weak starter. Cold metal conducts juice easier than warm.

The part that I dont get is that just sitting for 8 hrs in the sun at work and then it doesnt want to start. Never heard of a bike not wanting to start ( stone cold engine ) just from setting out in the sun all day....wierd.

Lance brought the bike over to the shop. Fired up the heat and let the shop warm up as I took him home. Got into it and found lots of nice goodies.

First off there was very very weak spark and the battery went flat pretty quick so I charged it till the charger read "battery fully charged" on the screen. Touched the meter to the hot wire coming off the wire harness to the coils and hit the button. Insantanious drop to 9.17 volts at the coils...so battery was junk. Took it to the local dealership and had them test it and as I already knew.."battery bad" was the reading. (Took it in so I had the test slip as proof for him).

              The rest of the list....

              Air filter solidly clogged up
Breather element down at the lower left frame for the air induction system....case full of debris and element dirty
Both intake manifolds cracked very badly
One slide for the carbs was stuck fully open when i lifted them with my finger to test..wouldnt fall.
He had no recollection of the valves ever being adjusted..so thats gotta happen.

He is looking at $230.00 in parts plus my labor.

really? That is a lot - I mean 2 out of 3 - almost all 3 elements wrong/failing? (electrics/carburetion/compression) Well good - another bike on the road. after you get used to the architecture of the XV they are a snap. - to work on not ride. lol.

when changing the rear tire - take the whole pumpkin drive out of the frame- whole thing slides right out tire and all. blink tire change / balance in less than 15 minutes.

I dont think the guy ever did a day of maintenance on the bike myself.

NOTE...18,600 miles on the clock and as funky as things are, thats why i say he didnt do squat.
