I think top speed is 125 or so
Its a piece of history and no one needs it to be a superbike.

No light weight for sure. But the GS1100e is listed at 560; five lbs less? And it was one of the fastest bikes ever when it was introduced. Remember is was on the street in late 1974. What was quicker or faster? The KZ maybe? And probably not by much.

I think it is remembered as heavy and slow because so many were fitted with lots of extras like fairings and luggage. And it was a water cooled bike when most were air cooled. There was also an early negative story about is handling that stuck too. I haven't pushed mine that hard but it handles about what you'd expect for a bike designed in the early 70s.

Ugly? yeah the side covers are too big and the rear brake light was very rail road like. But a standard one without all the crap on it is pleasant enough.

I noticed that the early ones that are in good shape are actually starting to bring some more money. But people bought so many of them that they were some of the cheapest liter bikes to be had for a long time.

All I know is a naked one is fast enough.

        WhooHooooo!!!!

They do look correct with a 450lb rider, a 250lb woman on the back, six foot wide pile of camping gear tied on with string and topped off with a pair of lawn chairs.
If that's what you want go for it.
What a guy can't have a chair to sit on next to the fire?

I like the chunk of ugly carpet bungied to the seat look too.

I think Harley riders get a bad rap for stabbing way too much farkle **** on their bikes. They are far outclassed by the GL crowd. And its that really nasty chromed plastic stuff too.

And for some reason the instant a guy gets a goldwing they immediately start think about how to pull a trailer with it.

And of course they all have the hanging/swinging handlebar can holder. Because you wouldn't want to stop drinking beer while riding to the store for more beer.

Yeah its not a off the line rocket ship. And Tom, if you look at the estimated top speeds in reviews of the 78 1000s or the 79 for that matter..youll see similar stated top speeds. So your sarcasm isnt actually warrented.

Long legs and pretty smooth. Enough power at a reasonable engine speed to make it go well.

Its slower to roll than some other bikes; probably a bit longer wheel base. But that's OK with me, its kind of my speed.

The PO of mine must have been vertically challenged. Not only are the forks up in the trees about an inch, which is fine, but it has 'lowering' shocks. Blah. I'm thinking a really nice set of shocks with a piggy back reservoir and about an inch longer than stock. Any longer and the wheel will be in the ground when up on the center stand.

All that plastic on Jeep's GL... yikes.

they used to lower the forks for handling purposes back in the day..said it made it more nimble in corners.

I pushed my forks up about 3/4" and it does indeed handle quicker, and it visually levels the bike up. The front end sits a bit high to my eye in the stock position.

Agreed, it does to me too.

Even with the folks raised an inch or so its still not what you'd call a quick handling bike. I'd have to check the wheel base but it seems longish. I'm thinking an inch taller shock would be a good addition too. But it can wait until I redo the front suspension too.
