That often happens right where the rings parked while the bike was in storage.

It's been run since the pitting happened so it wore away any other rust. I'd just run it another 100,000 miles or so, but if the engine is apart already you might as well fix it.

I built 40 engines last year. Take the advice or leave it, as always.

Good luck in any case, see ya.
We obviously have several members that don't know Sage advice if it bit them in the @$$. Thanks for posting I enjoy reading what you are willing to share. Rest assured when it was time for me to do my head, I did not touch it but rather let an expert flow the head.

I call BS on some of the bashing in this thread. gearhead13 made it clear that he did not enlarge the ports, he just cleaned them up and (obviously) remove the guides and bosses. Who gives a crap if Yoshimura uses epoxy to shrink the ports, that's out of scope for what most of us around here do. We can appreciate advice via warning about removing too much material inside the ports, but the accusation that this happened is just an assumption based on photos of one port, and nothing can/should be concluded based on that.

Regarding DYI, including porting, I see nothing wrong with it. I've pocket ported both my GS1000 heads as well as the KZ750 head I just finished. I was careful to not open up the port size, rather I just blended away the sharp edges and casting slag left over from the manufacturing process. Bash away, I don't care. Everyone is a freaking critic.

I call b.s.,,haha that is golden. Which part exactly that i stated clearly did you find to be b.s.?

Because my experience and/or opinion is different than yours, I am bashing somebody? Everybody think alike and we can all be friends huh? Boy, that sounds like loads of fun.

Ok, I change my opinion and input to whatever you would like it to be. Thanks again for thinking for me, it's getting so tiring to do it on my own.

Nah, i'll stick to what I know to be true

He removed material. The ports got bigger and smoother. They were already too big. He gained nothing by doing that, and possibly lost power.

What i'm hearing from you is "We don't have the knowledge, talent, equipment or experience to gain power the right way, but, we wanna mess with it anyway so here's what we did. And by god more air volume equals more power." That simply is not true. Cylinder filling has more to do with velocity than volume.

That is my opinion and it will not change regardless of the light you attempt to put me in.

Back to the original post, if he's not used any oil in 2-3000km he's not got an oil problem.

I don't know about honing too much, but it does seem like your hatch pattern is off. It should look like this <> but standing up. Either your drill was spinning too fast or you weren't moving it in and out of the cylinder fast enough. That can cause rings to not seat properly. Also, once an engine is honed (at least when it comes to cars) you're supposed to load the engine (about 3k rpm steady) for a few minutes, then drain oil immediately. Don't quote me on those values as they differ from application to application. You do that for proper ring seating as well.

I used 50 grit emery cloth to smooth out casting flaws, it is actually rougher than before.
I have a 1990 GSXR 750 head here as well and it HAS BIGGER PORTS than this one had and has, go figure.
Anyway I did it and it is done no going back so can we drop it?
I was thinking of using my spare cylinders and pistons until I found the imperfections on the cylinder wall of one hole, so I think I am just going to decarbonize it and put the head back on and just run it.
