Moped, Scooter, or 250cc bike for riding in Hawaii

I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the extra bucks to rent a Suzuki T250 over a moped for 2 weeks in Hawaii. My buddy there has a moped, which got me around locally but was a bit under-rated (power, materials, suspension, etc) for travel up the coast. I made it half-way and had to cut across the island due to the roads being rough and hilly. A Suzuki T250 I imagine would be more comfortable, but I'm not sure how the power:weight compares. One benefit of a moped is that you can ride on the side of the road, around traffic, and park on sidewalks. But I don't think that's worth being limited from a tour to the North Shore, for example. There are scooters, too, but they're more expensive.

    Any thoughts?

Go with the 250 (scooters suck). My neighbor had a mega-Suzuki (Voyager?), traded it for the 250 and loves it.

I'm going on vacation myself and plan on renting a Harley instead of a car.

2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.

A regular "full size" scooter would be best, IMO. Something like a Honda PCX150 or Suzuki Burgman 200. The extra storage would come in really handy, and there's some weather protection too. If the choice is between a moped and the 250 though, I'd take the 250.

(And Rob, scooters don't suck, they're actually a hoot to ride! )

I was looking at mopeds vs the 250. Actual scooters are more $ than the 250. For some (sick?) reason I'd rather rent the 250 than a 1200 Sportster, which would be only $50 more per week.

Exactly....you are going on vacation to relax and rejuvenate your inner awesomeness.......not to become a meathead. Lol
Either way, have an awesome vacation....Hawaii seems like heaven.

On Hawaii I'd rather rent a 250 than a Harley, and a scooter is far more practical than either. Why get on the highway anyway?

Scooter all the way here. I had a 650 Burgman and regret ever selling it. What a hoot!

Just to be clear, I'm talking about a 50cc 'moped' and the 250 motorcycle. There are 200cc scooters for a little more $$$

50cc isn't really enough to get from the south end of the island to the North Shore, and to cut across the island E/W there are only highways.

                • A 'standard' (low end) 50cc moped is only $235 for 12 days though which is nice.
                • 'Deluxe' 50cc is $360
                • The Suzuki is $450.
                • A 200cc scooter is $500

I'd spend the extra $100 for the big scooter. Perfect bike for Hawaii.

My mistake - I just voted for the 200cc scooter, when I meant to say 250cc motorcycle.

In Hawaii, I would grab a Triumph. Not too big, just enough power and after a few drinks, you can ride it on the sidewalks......

Remind me to get out of the way when I see you on a moped/scooter riding on the sidewalk! 🍸🍸

I'm going to an island (in the Atlantic) myself soon, and I looked into renting a bike. Sportsters are $49/day, the big twins $99. There's even a "luxury" Harley for $250 a day! I'm assuming they'll rent me a helmet.

Good thing I have a soft spot for Sportys. Also glad that I've already tried the 103 inch, and never the 883.

The prices you mentioned for Hawaii are for two weeks?

Somewhere over the past few days I saw the phrase "this isn't a dress rehearsal" - so I went for the motorcycle. I used my buddy's moped last time and I was really missing the clutch and shifter. Plus I read some reviews and specs and the Suzuki and 200cc scooter are virtually identical in performance and weight.

The prices are for 2 weeks, although I was expecting to get a better deal on the T250 - it ended up being $500.

$250 per week is pretty darned good, rentals are usually closer to $100 - $150 per day. It should be a lot of fun blasting around the island.
