Any thoughts or direction to look at would be nice though.Cleaning them up would be way easier with the springs removed.

82 GPz750 shock spring removal?
I'm wanting to remove the springs on my nicer shocks to clean them up.Thinking the damping adjuster bell might make it interesting if not impossible. If nobody can answer here or on KZR at least I have a dead set to experiment on

Those shocks are junk. Throw them away, the shafts are rusty.
I took my KZ750 shocks apart and painted the springs. I think you need to compress the springs (I used ratchet type tie down straps) and then punch out a pin under the upper spring collar. The damper adjusters are fiddly but no big deal. I'm trying to remember how they fit...but can't.Ed

Yes Ed I know those are junk.Have a much better set I want to redo. Those junkers are good for seeing if I can get the springs off fairly easy though without the possibility of messing up my good set.

When you compress the springs, the tops will either have a locking shim that you can remove or the caps screw onto the shafts.
Hard to tell without pics of the tops of the shocks.Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )
Past:
VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

Did the dry run on my bad shock yesterday. It was easier than I expected.Once the spring was compressed with the ratchet straps the wire retainer for the adjuster bell was easy to remove.Taking the bell off reviled the adjuster mechanism,a spur gear to the internal mechanism driven be a nylon ring gear keyed to the bell. The spring seat/retainer is a simple slide out type so that was easy to.Still glad I tried a dead shock first. Now to see if the "new" ones are place keepers or more than that.Pics will be done with the good ones, just wanted to concentrate on doing it for the dry run.

I remember way back attempting to dissasemble my '82 1100E shocks. Technically they were "non serviceable" however I did get them apart as I wanted to restore the paint but upon reassembly it got very tricky getting the dampening adjusters timed and assembled correctly. In hindsight I should have just left them factory assembled. One of the dampener dial adjusters never felt right after I reassembled. I built myself a simple spring compressor something like this :'06 HD Fatboy

Yes making them look nice was the plan, only if they had some damping left. There's 2 bits of bad news. The first is there's next to no compression damping left. There's some rebound but I don't think it's enough either so they're just place holders till I can get a set of RFY's redone by this guy http://chrislivengood.net/wp/ .The second is my camera crapped out, well actually the old rechargeable batteries ain't holding much charge anymore.Did take pics with the phone but I seem to be having trouble getting them on to my computer.
