Modify Steering Stops
Is there a relatively easy and safe way to reduce your steering travel by a 1/4" or so at each extreme direction? I have read some people do that to track bikes. Without getting long-winded, the lowers (fork air-deflectors) on my Suzuki 1500 cruiser touch my highway (crash) bars when the handlebars are turned fully in either direction. I would only need something like a 1/4" shim between the two cast steering stops to fix things. True to my southern heritage, for now, I have some black duct tape on the crash bars to prevent scratching.1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser

Drill a hole in the existing stop and put a small bolt/washer/nut combination to reduce travel? haven't done it but it seems like it should work.....I think I saw it done somewhere else. Or drill/tap the stop and just use a bolt for an adjustable stopper.sigpic

If you can't drill and tap a hole for a small screw or bolt, how about some JB Weld and a washer or two?

Thanks for the suggestions. I saw something online about the drill and tap idea and had considered the jB Weld myself. I think I will try the JB Weld as it seems less invasive and if it doesn't hold up, it probably can do no harm. I wasn't sure it would bond well enough but I probably would hardly ever hit the stop with much force.1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser

I drilled and tapped my steering stops on the track bike. It's easy if you have an aluminum frame. Then screwed in a 6mm Allen head. A lot of guys do it this way at the track.1979 GS850G

Easy peasy. I just drilled and didn't tap with a 3/16" bit. Hope the metric police don't get me for those 3/16" holes.1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser
