Not difficult at all
Buy a nice one and ride it, or
Buy a fixer and spend more money than you would have on the nice one
My friend The Collector always goes for the most complete bike he can buy, he's found that the most economical way.1978 GS 1000 (since new)

Are you looking for a fun project or you looking for a low-cost way to have a reliable T500?

Look for 2 stroke forums. I found a few with a quick search. I like the T 500. Seen a few nicely restored ones around the city........

Join the Suzuki 2 stroke forum & post your interest in a new topic under for sale/wanted.
A few months ago a member had a topic selling a nice T500 with a GT500 disk brake — I think he might still have it.
The T500s are pretty easy to work on if you want to go that route.
The service manuals are not all that useful but there is plenty of help available via the forum.

I had one a couple years ago. I bought it for 300 US and, luckily it didn't take much to get it running. rode it for most of the summer without a problem. sold it for 1200. Kind of collectible it seems. Simple and sturdy bike. light and easy to ride. I always used the kick starter for the nostalgia. couldn't see keeping it though. I figured it should go to some one who would treat it special.2002 bmw r1150gs 1978 gs1000E skunk les pew 1979 gs1000L dragbike

Better after market in the Kawi triples or for affordable wheelie fun the yamaha rd series. But if that configuration turns your crank buy smart. Do a compression check before buying and use a borescope for a visual. (https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-...rial/401578011) I would do a parts search for top end kits. If you ride a two stroke you will need to do a top end sooner than later.

T500 top end kits are easy to get and reasonable $$$. Crank seals are a little harder to get. Crank main bearings are hard to find & big $$$.
eBay seller CruzinImage sells these parts but I’m not sure of the quality.
3 companies sell new expansion chambers.
Suzuki modified the the T500 crankcase around 1973-1974 to increase transmission oil capacity & improve transmission durability.
A modification part is available to retrofit older crankcases.
The 1968—1975 T500 & 1976-1977 GT500 are pretty much the same.
The GT500 has a different gas tank — the frame was changed to accommodate the different tank.
The T500 has points & the GT500 has pointless PEI ignition.
The T500 has a 2LS front drum brake & the GT500 has the large disc brake rotor also used on early GS-series bikes.
Lots of performance goodies are available for Yamaha RD motors.

I had a 73 T500. It was stone reliable and a good, smooth powerband. I didn't care for it riding 2 up. It was a good bike that I wished I'd kept. It did not have a starter. I got it because the girl who bought it previous to me couldn't kick it with her foot problem.
