gsx250 coming down to idle prob

I have had this bike afew months now and this problem is really annoying me, with every downshift when coming to a stand still i need to give it a little rev, if i dont and continue to go down the gears till i stop it will rattle and stall on me, ( Its not only annoying but gets abit of attention at the lights and its the last thing i want from the Police ) when i fire it up in the morning it idles fine but once its warmed up it just wants to rattle and stall at idle so i have to give it a little rev every 5-10 seconds. The rattle only happens till i give it the first little rev as i come to a stop, it doesnt keep happening as it idles.

I have had problems with the cam chain tensioner sticking and was thinking this could be the cause of the stalling coming down through the gears as well as the little rattle. I have had it apart afew times now and thought i finally fixed it by polishing the 2 surfaces/ cams on the tensioner that come together but it still seems to be a problem unless the rattle is from elsewhere.

The bike is off the road for now until i replace the front fork oil seals So i can rip into it.

Any ideas?

could it be a carb problem, wheres the rattle coming from ? has it got a proper air filter ?

I'd be looking at carbs/air intake too for sure.

The rattle could be a symptom not part of the cause as when the rev's get too low they tend to vibrate a bit which could just have something rattling there.

Can you adjust the idle too low and with it sitting in the driveway see if that causes the rattle to come back? That may allow you to isolate the source of the rattle and see if it seems to be a symptom or cause...

It has the original fitting air filter, i'm not really interested in pod filters etc. I'll fire it up and see if i can drop the idle real low, I have had problems with the carbs before when i first got the bike it would not idle at all it would just stall and parts for the BS30SS carbs are so overpriced its not funny!

Most likely the carb boot O-rings are leaking. A hanging idle is one of the most common problem with GS bikes that have the type of boots that use O-rings.

Not sure how long they take to get here from the US, but it's costing me about $15 to get his 450 combo set sent over, and that's including postage.

Ok i'll look at getting some new O rings for it and maybe some new boot rubbers as well, my other question is, is it worth converting to a solid locked tensioner?

No. Just service the tensioner you have.

I'd clean the carbs first and once you get the idle/pilot system cleaned and sorted, then see if you're still getting any rattle noise.

Ok i tipped some water over the inlet rubbers and the revs dropped so there is definitely an air leak there. The rubbers are pretty hard so i would say they are shot.

Are the inlet rubbers available anywhere else non genuine? Genuine parts here cost an arm and a leg!

Try the online US places such as www.alpha-sports.com, www.bikebandit.com, www.cyclepartsnation.com, www.babbittsonline.com.

Some guys have found that the prices are so much cheaper that the shipping is worth the cost.

For example, I got all my case cover stainless bolts from Z1 and shipping was about $18US due to our current awesome exchange rate, and the O rings coming from www.cycleorings.com are about $15US including postage and intake boot allen head screws.

If you need them urgently, then it will be quite a lot more expensive for shipping though, the $18US option for the bolts took a couple of weeks to get here and I don't have the O rings yet as I only ordered them just the other day.

Often it ends up costing the same and is a lot quicker just to got through your suzuki dealer.

Try this guy too www.suziparts.com.au prices seem to vary depending on their "rareness", but he might surprise you.

Thanks Coady, missed partshark off my list and totally agree with suziparts.

The two bolts and a screw I just had to get from him because I couldn't get them from the dealer were $19 including postage... glad I got them (critical for the rebuild) and while the price won't send me broke, it's certainly a lot for 3 little items like that.

Sounds like the the start of a little bit of cam end float iv got the same problem with my 79 model 450 gs. does it go away when you rev it to say 1800 to 2000 rpm ?

Iv learn't from this site that suzuki do a waver washer set to put on ends of cams to resolve the cam end float. Im going to contact a suzuki dealer to see if these parts do exsist as a couple of guys i no in the trade have never heard of them.
