Hello

Does anyone know if the 2 piece clutch pushrod will work in my 1980 450? It looks like the old 1 piece is no longer available.

As far as I'm aware it should, the exact same length is covered left to right, and it looks like the only things that changed from around '80 to '82 was the pushrod into a two piece, and then they also changed the oil seal from a flanged type to a non flanged with a retainer bracket.

I'd certainly get the two piece and give it a go, I'd say 90%+ chance of it being a slot in replacement.

I cross referenced all the other clutch parts from an 1983 450l and everything clutch related has the same part# except the 2 pushrods . The end of the rod that attaches to the clutch appears to have a bolt shape at the end were the original is drawn tappered on the fiche sketch.
I hope they were forward thinking engineers!!

Yep, that's true, however the push piece (number 13) is the same part number in the '80 - '82 fiche as it is in the '83 fiche, so I'd still say go for it

You are right Pete it looks like they just changed the rod assembly.
Ill try it and and change the plates and springs while im at it. Might as well change the seal too.

Can anyone tell me how to tell if I have a flanged type clutch pushrod seal or the non flanged type. The holder is one of the half moon type rather than the full coverage style. I can see about 2/3 of the seal and the replacement I bought looks the same size. I bought the non flange seal.

Have a look at the diagram here and see if your retainer type is 21 or 22. Numbers are a tad hard to read, so 22 is the one with two complete circles on it (one for the clutch push rod, one for the drive shaft). Mine is the 22 type:



Number 21 is for the flange type oil seal, number 22 is for the non-flange type oil seal.

If you have 21, you really need the flange type oil seal or I believe it will be able to pop out under pressure.

Apparently, number 22 is still available from Suzuki if you wish to change and it's only $5.98 at Alpha Sports. I'm not sure if there are any other implications in the change besides not having to use the flange type oil seal.

I have the #21 retainer so it looks like ill have to fight to get the flanged seal out. I thought I read somewhere that the bikes with the flanged seal had no threaded holes to mount a seal holder. If it is a flanged seal why bother with a holder ? Anyway, i'll buy the new style holder and go from there.

I do recall a thread where someone said they had the flange type seal and no bolt holes for a bearing/seal retainer. No pic's unfortunately to clarify, so I was a little confused by that one too.

If you have 21, you have the bolt holes, so 22 should be a straight forward replacement I would think.

Certainly beats trying to replace the flange type seal...

Can I pry out the old seal by installing screws and pulling on them with vise grips. I guess I'm asking if the flange will give way . Breaking the cases is way out of my league.

i dont know how easy it would be to get it pulled out... i have mine out it is the flange type seal with the retainer #21 here is a pic of the seal...







if you put screws in it to try and pull it out and cant get it to, then you would have to crack the case for sure to get a new one in... i am now thinking i will change mine to the non flanged seal and get the new retainer #22... as pete said would be easier to change later down the road if need be...

I have definitely heard of people using screws to pull them out, one on either side from memory, although I haven't had to do that myself. I split the cases... different story there though.

My way of looking at it is the retainer style and non-flange seal was a design change, and usually the engineers improve things as they go, so I expect it's an "upgrade" to go to the non-flange type seal.

By the look of the roosters flanged seal I should be able to pull it out of the case usig the self tapping screw method. Ordered the new holder today,and I already have the non flanged seal.
